Inspiration

Hello, dear fellows! It is not easy that we all need to navigate our lives with the quarantine situation around the globe. With our workout routines disrupted and work, school, and Covid threatening to burn us out, the last thing we need is an unexpected breakout right before a big Zoom meeting. Don’t we all want to take good care of ourselves and present our best face in front of other fellows?

What it does

Quinn is a web browser-based app to recommend clean skincare products for men. Users take a five-question survey regarding their skin concerns, and the app will recommend them a curated selection of products, such as some essentials for men: facial cleanser, moisturizer, suncare, and face masks.

At Quinn, our goal is to help you build a healthy and easy-to-follow skincare routine. No more confusion and frustration. Want a glowy skin for your next zoom meeting? Come and join Quinn!

How we built it

Frontend: HTML & CSS, jQuery

Backend: Flask, MongoDB

Recommender system: KNN, Fast.ai collab

Deployment: Heroku

Challenges we ran into

1. A good skincare dataset for men. Throughout this hackathon, we experimented with the Amazon product review data (all beauty section), web scraped data from sites like Sephora, EWG, and Dermstore.

2. Development environment setup for scikit-learn. For backend, we ran into issues of unable to unpickle the recommender systems model due to different scikit-learn version.

3. Deploying a Machine Learning model into a web application instead of just utilizing it in a notebook was a unique challenge for us all.

What's next for Quinn

1. Adding a mobile version of Quinn

2. Further redefining and narrowing down a list of curated skincare products for men. Incorporating the product ingredients approach for the recommendation vs. skin concerns

3. Adding reviews and more product description to the recommended products page so that user do not need to spend time researching on them and helps to increase our user engagement KPIs
