π Inspiration
Quiln was born from a simple realization: writing platforms today often forget the writer.
Most tools focus on distribution or SEO - but where is the space that nurtures creativity, community, and progress for the modern writer?
As a writer myself, I often feel that writing online feels transactional - like you're shouting into a void, unsure if anyone hears.
This is a step forward, towards change.
Quiln provides a space where stories feel alive, achievements feel earned, and writers feel seen. A place where writing is celebrated β not just published.
β¨ What it does
Quiln is a social platform designed for writers and readers. It empowers users to:
- Publish short stories, poems, novels, and collections.
- Discover writing from a global creative community.
- Track creative progress through a gamified achievement system.
- Explore curated international writing competitions and opportunities in one centralized place.
- Track individual content performance and insights with profiles and dashboards.
- Engage with a growing community of passionate storytellers.
π οΈ How we built it
Quiln was built using a full modern web stack:
- Frontend: React + TypeScript + Vite
- Styling: Tailwind CSS for a clean and responsive UI
- Routing: React Router
- State Management: React Context API
- Backend: Supabase (PostgreSQL + Auth)
- Database Migrations: Handled via Supabase CLI
From modular components like buttons and story cards to complex features like achievements and profile stats, everything was crafted to feel intuitive, sleek, and writer-friendly.
π§ββοΈ Challenges we ran into
Like any real creative journey, Quiln had its own hurdles:
- Balancing beauty with speed: Making the platform visually appealing while keeping performance smooth, especially for mobile users.
- Achievement tracking logic: Designing an efficient and fair system to monitor dozens of user actions without overwhelming the database.
- Writer experience: Crafting an editor that feels light yet powerful β not too cluttered, not too bare.
- Scope management: It was tempting to add messaging, discussion forums, and AI co-writer early on β but staying focused on core features was key.
π Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a fully functional writer-first platform in a short timeframe.
- Designed and implemented Custom achievements to gamify writing.
- Created a seamless experience across writing, reading, social discovery, and dashboard insights.
- Curated an Opportunities tab featuring global writing contests and competitions.
- Maintained a polished UI/UX throughout, with responsive design and smooth interactions.
- Stayed true to our original vision - a platform that honors the writer.
π What we learned
- Less is more - simplicity in design and UX is far more powerful than overengineering.
- Writers care about progress - gamification works best when it's meaningful, not gimmicky.
- Full-stack development is a conversation between creativity and structure.
- And most of all: building something that you deeply care about is the most rewarding challenge you can take on.
