Inspiration
My main inspirations for this project are western games like Red Dead Redemption, and western films like The Outlaw Josey Wales or Django Unchained. I love the atmosphere of old western scenes, and wanted to create a scene that had a cool old western feel to it. Graphically, I love when games aren't hyper-realistic, but have their own style. I tried to get a more unrealistic feel and a bit more cartoony. Gameplay wise, I wanted to create something quick and fun, to not only fulfill the competition's requirements, but to give players a cool place to compete, interact socially, and have short quick rounds.
What it does
Quickdraw Canyon pairs two players in a Western-style duel, in the middle of an old western town for all to watch. Players start back-to-back, grab their pistols, then turn and shoot. The fastest and most accurate player wins. It recreates the classic Western showdown in an immersive VR environment.
How we built it
Using Meta Horizon Worlds' creation tools, I developed the game mechanics to maximize player interaction. The surrounding area of the fighting arena is small, with a great view of the fight that is going on. The environment was crafted to evoke a classic Western setting.
Challenges we ran into
Optimizing the scene for mobile and web compatibility is difficult, and in order to reduce lag, there are a ton of things to take into consideration. The most difficult part of this project was creating a scene from scratch using custom meshes and even a custom soundtrack. Given a relatively short timeframe to create the game, a lot of long nights went into trying to perfect each detail of the map and the gameplay.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully creating an engaging multiplayer VR experience that captures the intensity of Western duels. The game mechanics are intuitive yet challenging, making each match exciting and competitive. The way the environment and scene turned out is an accomplishment I'm very proud of - it came out better than expected.
What we learned
Gained deep understanding of VR multiplayer synchronization, spatial design in virtual environments, and how to create engaging competitive gameplay that leverages VR's unique capabilities. Optimizing scenes for web and mobile was also a great learning experience.
What's next for Quickdraw Canyon
Plans include adding various environments, different weapon types, and special game modes like tournament brackets. We're also considering adding AI opponents for single-player practice, instead of our current stationary target. Potentially also add a way for spectators to choose who they think will win, and earn money for picking the winner correctly. Cash has already been added, and in the future I'd like to add different cool things for people to buy with the cash they've earned - clothes, horses, gun skins, etc. would all be cool things to buy and show off your earnings!
