Software engineering and development have always been subject to change over the years. With new tools, frameworks, and languages being announced every year, it can be challenging for new developers or students to keep up with the new trends the technological industry has to offer. Creativity and project inspiration should not be limited by syntactic and programming knowledge. Quick Code allows ideas to come to life no matter the developer's experience, breaking the coding barrier to entry allowing everyone equal access to express their ideas in code.

What it does

Quick Code allowed users to code simply with high level voice commands. The user can speak in pseudo code and our platform will interpret the audio command and generate the corresponding javascript code snippet in the web-based IDE.

How we built it

We used React for the frontend, and the recorder.js API for the user voice input. We used runkit for the in-browser IDE. We used Python and Microsoft Azure for the backend, we used Microsoft Azure to process user input with the cognitive speech services modules and provide syntactic translation for the frontend’s IDE.

Challenges we ran into

"Before this hackathon I would usually deal with the back-end, however, for this project I challenged myself to experience a different role. I worked on the front end using react, as I do not have much experience with either react or Javascript, and so I put myself through the learning curve. It didn't help that this hacakthon was only 24 hours, however, I did it. I did my part on the front-end and I now have another language to add on my resume. "I have never worked with Microsoft Azure before this hackathon, but decided to embrace challenge and change for this project. Utilizing python to hit API endpoints was unfamiliar to me at first, however with extended effort and exploration my team and I were able to implement the model into our hack. Now with a better understanding of Microsoft Azure, I feel much more confident working with these services and will continue to pursue further education beyond this project." -Kris

Accomplishments that we're proud of

"We had a few problems working with recorder.js as it used many outdated modules, as a result we had to ask many mentors to help us get the code running. Though they could not figure it out, after hours of research and trying, I was able to successfully implement recorder.js and have the output exactly as we needed. I am very proud of the fact that I was able to finish it and not have to compromise any data." -Iyad

"This hackathon introduced me to Microsoft Azure's Speech to Text model and Azure web app. It was a unique experience integrating a flask app with Azure cognitive services. The challenging part was to make the Speaker Recognition to work; which unfortunately, seems to be in preview/beta mode and not functioning properly. However, I'm quite happy with how the integration worked with the Speach2Text cognitive models and I ended up creating a neat api for our app." -Amir

What's next for QuickCode

We plan on continuing development and making this product available on the market. We first hope to include more functionality within Javascript, then extending to support other languages. From here, we want to integrate a group development environment, where users can work on files and projects together (version control). During the hackathon we also planned to have voice recognition to recognize and highlight which user is inputting (speaking) which code.
