Inspiration
Substance addiction is an ongoing issue within society. It has detrimental effects on both mental and physical health. Our team was inspired to aid in solving this issue and helping those affected by it.
What it does
Our technology will create a full calendar plan to gradually help you quit your addition based on your personal circumstances. The plan will walk users through day by day, limiting factors they need to take, to help overcome their addiction. Users will be boosted with additional motivation through Quick Quit, keeping track of money saved from less cigarettes or alcohol as well as progress on how much they have cut down their intake of these substances
How we built it
The website frontend was created from using basic HTML and CSS. The database that holds all user information, including their login info was created using a a local MySQL server on XAMPP. Using php, the website is then connected to the server which allows a session to be created when the user is logged in. The calendar is made from a separate HTML file which is aided by an external JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
All team members we're entering their first Hackathon, and we found ourselves largely unprepared for the task at hand. Creating a database and connecting it to a website was something we've never done before, meaning we had to learn php, and how to create a fleshed out login system on the fly. As a result, the team ran out of time to implement all the desired features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a website with a full login system that connects to a separate database was a major accomplishment for the team given our experience. Having something to submit by the end of the hackathon was the main goal of the team, and while features may be missing, the team is still proud of the skills they learned, and the project they created within the last 24 hours.
What we learned
Collectively, our team learned how to integrate backend and front end operations into a seemlessly designed website. Most importantly, we learned how to connect a local server to a website that safely and efficiently stores and accesses user accounts. Additionally, team members not familar with front end development gained valuable experience working with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. This project taught us how to go through the design process, using effective idea generation and design iteration.
What's next for Quick Quit
Moving forwards with Quick Quit, our team aims to implement additional features. These include a built in ‘share’ feature, and a system to send notifications to the user through SMS, among others. We also plan to create a mobile app and improve the UI of the program.
