Inspiration
Every gamer has a "pile of shame" - games bought on sale, recommended by friends, saved from trailers - that never get played. Notes apps and spreadsheets turn that list into a chore. We wanted the backlog itself to feel like a game.
What it does
QuestLog is a gaming bucket list, gamified.
- Save in seconds - title, platform and a "vibe" (Cozy, Epic, Quick, Co-op, Story, Chill)
- Organize - Backlog -> Playing -> Completed shelves, with notes like "Chapter 4 - find the sky forge"
- Complete & rate - 5-star ratings when you finish a game
- Share - one-tap share cards via the native share sheet
- Level up - every action earns XP: +10 save, +25 start, +100 finish. Levels unlock titles from Couch Rookie to Legend of the Shelf
- Quest Roll - can't decide? An animated dice picks your next adventure
- Stats - completion rate, average rating, shelf by platform
Monetization with RevenueCat
Freemium with a contextual paywall:
- Free: up to 12 games, core tracking, ratings
- QuestLog Pro: unlimited shelf, Quest Roll, share cards, deep stats
- Yearly $19.99 with a 7-day free trial (anchored as "best value"), Monthly $3.99, Lifetime $39.99
The paywall opens exactly when a user reaches for a Pro feature and tells them which feature they tried ("Quest Roll picks your next game"), which converts better than a generic upsell. Built on react-native-purchases: offerings fetched from RevenueCat, purchasePackage, restorePurchases, and a live CustomerInfo listener on the pro entitlement so the UI unlocks instantly.
How we built it
Expo SDK 57 + React Native 0.86 + TypeScript. Local-first storage with AsyncStorage - no account required, instant start. Animated API for the XP bar and dice roll. A demo mode (no API key) lets the full flow run on web for previews and the demo video.
Challenges
Designing a reward loop that motivates finishing games rather than just adding more - so completion is worth 10x a save. Keeping the paywall honest: core tracking stays free forever.
What's next
Ship to App Store / Google Play, iCloud/Google sync, home-screen widget for "Now Playing", friends' shelves and co-op quests, and RevenueCat Experiments to A/B test trial length and price.
