Inspiration
The inspiration for "QuestIQ: Land of the Explorer" stemmed from the desire to leverage video games as educational tools, helping students improve their cognitive skills while enjoying an immersive and engaging experience. Recognizing the growing role of gamification in education, we sought to create a solution that would help players aged 16-21 enhance their problem-solving abilities while keeping stress at bay. Our goal was to blend entertainment with learning, challenging students to sharpen their IQ and hand-eye coordination in a fun and interactive way.
What it does
"QuestIQ: Land of the Explorer" is a 3D single-player game that enhances learning experiences by challenging players to solve educational questions and defeat enemies on a mysterious island. Players assume the role of Ellen, a stranded character, who must navigate through levels by answering questions to unlock health crates or fend off enemies. Correct answers are rewarded, while incorrect answers result in enemy attacks. The game combines combat, exploration, and educational challenges, serving as an engaging tool to develop critical thinking and cognitive skills.
How we built it
We developed "QuestIQ: Land of the Explorer" using the Unity engine, with the Unity 3D Game Kit to expedite the process. The Unity Game Kit laid the groundwork for the game's environment, and we added custom C# scripts to implement game-specific mechanics, ensuring a seamless blend of entertainment and education. The combination of a solid game foundation with custom scripting enabled us to create a rich, dynamic world that fosters learning through engaging gameplay.
Challenges we ran into
Creating a seamless experience with both educational and entertainment value presented several challenges. Integrating creative gameplay mechanics using the Unity 3D Game Kit required overcoming certain limitations. Additionally, managing the game’s large asset size was tricky when it came to hosting and optimizing performance for smooth player interaction. These challenges pushed us to find innovative solutions to deliver an optimal experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a game that successfully merges learning with fun. "QuestIQ: Land of the Explorer" isn't just a game; it’s a tool for cognitive development. By balancing engaging gameplay with educational content, we've developed an immersive experience that helps players improve their problem-solving skills and IQ while enjoying an adventurous journey.
What we learned
Developing "QuestIQ: Land of the Explorer" taught us how to balance educational goals with gameplay enjoyment. We learned the value of working within technical constraints while maintaining creativity. Our experience optimizing large assets and ensuring smooth gameplay performance provided invaluable lessons for future game development projects.
What's Next for QuestIQ: Land of the Explorer
Looking ahead, we plan to expand the game by offering customizable question sets, allowing players to tailor educational content to their interests. Additionally, we aim to optimize the game's assets to improve hosting capabilities and performance, making it more accessible online. Further updates may include new combat mechanics and advanced analytics to help players track their learning progress.
Additionally, we are exploring more efficient methods for hosting the game. Due to its large asset size, our initial attempts to deploy the game as a WebGL application were unsuccessful. We aim to optimize the game's assets to reduce its size and improve performance, making it more accessible for online hosting. By addressing these challenges, we hope to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for players across various platforms.
