Inspiration
As computer science and engineering students, we are constantly on the move to solve complex math problems, complete programming projects, and take care of our own mental and physical health. Add on clubs, a job, and trying to land that summer internship, and we thought there had to be a better way to manage everything. From there, we came up with the idea to build Questify.
What it does
Questify is the gamification of task completion. Take an app like Google Tasks: simple and efficient for completing your daily tasks, but too plain to show any long-term progress. Questify takes your daily tasks and rewards you by way of leveling up a customizable character. Your character unlocks items like clothes and fantasy gear like a magic staff by gaining experience every time you check a task as complete.
How we built it
We leveraged several AIs (Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, and Codex) to build Questify. The actual languages we used include HTML, JavaScript, Python, and CSS. We collaborated through GitHub and committed our changes through Visual Studio Code.
Challenges we ran into
Finding a place to download the images for the character avatar in different positions for the animations was tough; coding the actual animations was even more challenging but extremely satisfying. Since 3 of 4 members of our team are first-timers, we did have merge conflicts throughout the project. Fortunately, we all built better communication skills and were able to finish our project successfully.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some features we are most proud of include: item unlock animations, a functional inventory that the user is able to equip and unequip their unlocked items, and confetti popping up when you check tasks as complete.
What we learned
Teamwork is important, and people do not appreciate modern developers enough. Building a small project like this had its challenges, so it's hard to imagine the kind of roadblocks that big game developers run into. It just goes to show that whether you are a first-time hackathon participant or the developer of the next big Souls game, it is important to have clear communication with your teammates to work together in the most efficient manner.
What's next for Questify
After the conclusion of SwampHacks 2026, we would love to continue developing our app. We are very passionate about the work we've put in and want to share it and get feedback from as many people as possible.
