Inspiration
Girls Who Code showed that only 25% of CS grads are women. We wanted to make coding feel like a game, not a scary class. Inspired by HHS community, we thought - what if coding could solve real social problems like education access, mental health, climate?
What it does
QuestHer is a 2D story game:
- Level 1: Code a bridge to help a village girl reach school (Education for All)
- Level 2: Debug a mental health chatbot for a friend
- Level 3: Use loops to plant trees and fight climate change Player types simple Python-like blocks and sees magic happen instantly. No prior coding needed!
Beginner Friendly: Drag-and-drop code blocks, hints, cute rewards. Gaming: Pixel art, levels, badges. Social Good: Every level teaches one UN Sustainable Goal.
How we built it
- Engine: Pygame + Python - perfect for beginners
- Art: Custom pixel art (Aseprite style)
- Code Blocks: Blockly-style visual programming
- Story: Written with 3 girls from our school
- Deploy: Replit for easy try-it-out link
Challenges we ran into
Making code feel like a game, not homework. We simplified syntax to 5 commands only: move(), build(), repeat, if, help.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Playable demo in 12 hours
- Tested with 5 beginner girls - all finished Level 1 without help!
- 100% aligns with Girls Who Code mission
What we learned
Games can teach empathy + logic together. Simple is powerful.
What's next for QuestHer
