Inspiration

The inspiration for QuestConnect comes from the need to tackle common issues faced by university students: loneliness, low campus engagement, and the difficulty in making meaningful connections. Campus life can be overwhelming, especially for new students, and many struggle with social anxiety, finding study partners, or getting involved in extracurricular activities. Our goal was to transform campus life into an interactive, rewarding adventure by blending social networking with gamification.

What it does

QuestConnect is a gamified social networking app designed to help students engage more meaningfully with their peers, explore campus events, and make new connections through fun challenges and quests. It offers:

  • Real-world quests to encourage social interaction and academic collaboration.
  • Geolocation-based challenges for discovering new campus hotspots and events.
  • AI-powered matchmaking to connect students based on their interests, major, and goals.
  • A leaderboard & XP system that rewards students for participating in social and academic activities.
  • Event syncing to ensure students never miss out on campus happenings.

How we built it

We started with a Figma design to outline the user interface and experience. The core tech stack for building the MVP includes:

  • React Native for a cross-platform mobile app that works seamlessly on both iOS and Android.
  • Firebase Cloud Functions for backend logic, ensuring smooth real-time updates.
  • Firebase Firestore for storing and retrieving data related to user profiles, quests, and rewards.
  • Redux Toolkit for managing the global state of the app efficiently.
  • Mapbox or Google Maps API for implementing geolocation features like campus scavenger hunts.
  • OpenAI API for integrating AI-powered matchmaking to help students find like-minded peers.

The app design focuses on user-friendly navigation, smooth animations, and simple integration with campus events, creating an immersive and interactive experience.

Challenges we ran into

  • Geolocation Accuracy: Ensuring precise location tracking for campus scavenger hunts and quest check-ins was tricky, but we overcame this by carefully configuring geofencing and adjusting the accuracy settings.
  • Balancing Gamification with Engagement: It was challenging to create a system that rewards participation without making the experience feel like a competition for casual users. This balance was achieved by adjusting XP rewards and offering both competitive and collaborative features.
  • Privacy Concerns: With location-based features, some students were hesitant to opt into sharing their real-time location. We solved this by offering opt-in geolocation and providing clear communication about how location data is used.
  • User Adoption: Getting students to download and engage with a new app required early buy-in from campus organizations and student unions, which we addressed through campus partnerships and initial promotions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • User-Centric Design: The seamless integration of gamification with campus life has been praised for its potential to reduce social anxiety and encourage social interaction.
  • AI-powered Matchmaking: Developing an AI algorithm that connects students based on academic and personal interests was a significant achievement, helping students build meaningful relationships.
  • Real-World Rewards: Partnering with local businesses to offer tangible rewards (e.g., free coffee, discounts) for completing quests was a win, making engagement both fun and beneficial.
  • Campus Partnerships: Securing partnerships with several campus organizations, such as clubs and event organizers, to incorporate their events into the app was a major milestone.

What we learned

  • Iteration is Key: Testing and gathering feedback from actual students helped refine the app’s features and ensure it met their needs. We learned that students prefer simple, clear tasks with immediate rewards, which shaped how we designed quests and challenges.
  • Community Engagement: Building a community around the app is crucial. We found that university clubs and organizations played a vital role in driving engagement by incorporating their own events into the app.
  • Privacy and Transparency: Students are highly concerned about their data privacy, so we learned the importance of being transparent about how we collect and use their information.

What’s next for QuestConnect

  • Beta Testing: We plan to roll out a closed beta with a select group of students to gather more feedback before launching it campus-wide.
  • Expand Quest Types: We’ll introduce more creative and diverse quests, such as photo challenges, study group formation, and campus-wide scavenger hunts.
  • Global Expansion: Once we validate the MVP at a few campuses, we aim to expand to multiple universities, creating a larger community of students.
  • Monetization: We plan to introduce premium features such as exclusive quests, XP multipliers, and partnerships with local businesses for advertising and rewards.

This outline captures the key elements of QuestConnect, from the inspiration to future plans, and highlights how the app can change the way students interact with their campus and peers.
