》Inspiration
We founded Tiny Knight Games (TKG) with the goal of creating an ecosystem of Theta Blockchain-based games that are accessible to anyone and connected by a shared pool of NFTs, which are all available on one marketplace. Our new game – Occult of the Oculi – (OotO) makes that vision a reality.
Our first game, Theta Hackathon Q3 2021 Gaming category-winning submission Extreme Fishing (now known as Fisher's Quest), was a simple AFK fishing game inspired by minigames from titles such as Stardew Valley, New World, and Black Desert Online. Players could convert any equipment or fish they get in-game into their own NFT with the click of a button, making it easy to introduce people to both our games and the Theta Blockchain.
For our second game, we wanted to accomplish a few different things:
- Reward players for playing with friends, encouraging them to introduce new people to Theta Blockchain-based games,
- Create ways for players to earn tradeable NFTs without ever needing TFuel (or any token), allowing them to enter the Theta ecosystem purely through playing the game, and
- Develop a unique cooperative roguelike game that players will want to play again and again (even while they have Fisher’s Quest open in another tab)!
Enter Occult of the Oculi, a cooperative roguelike inspired by titles such as Binding of Isaac, where players can work together to clear randomly-generated floors, defeat a variety of bosses, uncover the story of their creation, and earn free NFT drops!
On top of this, we’ve updated our Marketplace from version 1.0 to 2.0, allowing all existing and future players to buy, sell, and make offers on any NFTs in our ecosystem.
》What it does
Occult of the Oculi
Occult of the Oculi is a free-to-play, 1-to-4 player cooperative roguelike game where players work together to discover powerups, lore, and free NFT drops. Our current focus is Act 1, but we have 10 acts planned, each of which will be freely accessible on TKG’s website.
- Gameplay: Players work together to scale 4 floors of a tower, with a powerful boss waiting at the end of every floor. Along the way, they can find power-ups to help them progress, and have a chance at loot for every floor they clear!
- Story: The player is an Oculus, a floating eye creature with uncertain origin, locked away in a dungeon with hundreds of other Oculi. As they leave the dungeon, defeat bosses, and clear the game, the player learns more about their creation, the world around them, and the bosses they encounter.
- NFTs: Any equipment the player finds can be turned into a generative NFT, just like in Fisher’s Quest. However, players can also receive loot crates (sent to the player's wallet at no cost to the player), which can be opened by the player (at the cost of TFuel) to obtain limited-edition NFTs, or traded to other players on the TKG Marketplace.
- Replayability: Each floor of the dungeon will randomly generate each playthrough, and players will encounter a maximum of 4 of the game’s 8 bosses on one playthrough. They’ll also receive random in-game powerups, and their equipment will have different potential buffs, ensuring no two runs are ever the same!
Marketplace 2.0
All NFTs are now tradeable on TKG’s Marketplace 2.0! The Marketplace is a huge component of our ecosystem, as all of our NFTs (for every game) are able to be listed and sold between players. We launched our initial Marketplace in late February 2023 with three core functions: list an item for sale, cancel an existing listing, and buy a listed item. New features for Marketplace 2.0:
- Added Functions: We expanded Marketplace 2.0 and added the ability to Update an existing Market Item and to Make an Offer for any NFT in our ecosystem. This meant we needed to add five new functions: createMarketOffer, cancelMarketOffer, updateMarketOffer, transactMarketOffer, and updateMarketItem.
- Price Transparency: Gas Estimates for every transaction calculated and displayed within the UI, so players always know what they’ll pay.
- Market Balance: Ability to hold a balance on the Market Contract that can be used to Buy Items and Make Offers. TFuel can be withdrawn from market sales at any time.

New Pool of NFTs (Ancient Crates)
Ancient Crates are earned by playing Occult of the Oculi. At the end of every Act completion you'll have a chance to earn a crate drop. Each crate contains 1 of 5,000 potential NFTs.

Players can do one of two things with each crate they receive:
- Open the crate for a fee of TFUEL
- Sell the crate on the Marketplace

Thetapass Integration
We have added Thetapass integration so you can link your Thetadrop wallets to Tiny Knight Games. More details on this integration coming soon!

》How we built it
- Unity (Github build repository for OotO)
- Symfony
- Theta Network
- Solidity
》Challenges we ran into
- Multiplayer sync for 4-player
- Rewriting Marketplace contract to Marketplace 2.0 version
- Setting up the flow for the NFT crates and token distribution and minting
- Integrating NFTs to be used across games
》Accomplishments that we're proud of
Jacob (Typho)
- 4-player multiplayer with procedurally generated maps this took some time to figure out
- Monster balancing and scaling and modular creation of new creatures, we can easily add more unique and crazy monsters for future acts
- Boss mechanics were a ton of fun to create and test, Biff is our very first boss and he's a lot of fun!
- Game UI, it's the worst thing in the world to work on but we did it!
Matt (Serik)
The Marketplace 2.0 revisions were a huge endeavor and I'm very happy with how it has turned out. I devoted the first four weeks of the hackathon to writing/testing the contract, adding in new website UI, and writing several blockchain sync scripts to ensure our NFT data is always in sync with the blockchain.
Game Art was a huge lift. We have 30 in-game items and 50 different NFTs, in addition to all of the game assets such as tile maps and enemies. We also spent a few iterations designing the new logo for Occult of the Oculi.
Connor (Edelast)
- Balancing player equipment stats around existing NFT values & scaling from Fisher’s Quest was a major challenge. We wanted the player to feel the value of their early equipment in Act 1 without breaking the game once the player unlocks end-game equipment later on. Our current balancing should give players early rewards, while still providing satisfaction when their equipment is upgraded.
- OotO is the first TKG game to have pre-planned lore, which was a unique challenge. We created an entire magic system that’s integrated into the player’s equipment, plus backstories for every boss, and a 10-act story progression plan. I’m extremely excited to reveal more to the players as we integrate the lore more into the game.
》What we learned
- Smart Contract development
- Better understanding of gas estimates and fees
- Setting up an NFT drop with crates. This is new territory for us as in the past all of our NFTs have been created on demand.
》What's next?
Occult of the Oculi
- Player Records
- Achievement System
- More Lore integration
- Gameplay Refinements
- New art + refined art assets
- New bosses for Act 1
- Acts 2 - 10
