Inspiration

Well, my inspiration isn't very symbolic. I created this project with the goal of being able to finance the next step in my life; maybe becoming an industrial cybersecurity engineer in Detroit to later start my own company in that field. But well, a friend (ChatGPT) told me that I should start from scratch, so Quenox is right.

What it does

It's cybersecurity. With all the hardware set up and the two rows of code; the ultrasonic sensor connected with jumpers to an Arduino will detect and record movement on the computer in centimeters, and if an object gets closer than 5 to 3 centimeters, the program will detect it as an anomaly!

How we built it

It’s built with a lot of details. First, the hardware you need: an Arduino UNO R3, a breadboard, 4 jumpers, an HC ultrasonic sensor, and 4 replacement wires in my case because I didn’t have male-to-male jumpers. For the software, you need to install Python in Visual Studio Code and make sure it’s set up to read Arduino using the Arduino IDE, and also some Microsoft C/C++ extensions. And even then, some details are still needed.

Challenges we ran into

Well, I could explain how it was really confusing trying to set up Python to read Arduino, or the adventures I went through to manage buying the items in the shortest possible time while covering kilometers. But without a doubt, the hardest part was trying to fight procrastination and dedicate 1 to 2 hours to working on this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very proud of having managed to build something that is not part of my university career. It's good to do something tangible and not theoretical. I also appreciate my determination and will to make Quenox real!

What we learned

I learned a lot about building microcontrollers and about learning C++ firmware, how this field called cybersecurity works, which will undoubtedly help me professionally in the future. But still, I have a lot to learn about SCADA, the Purdue model, etc.

What's next for Quenox: Anomaly detector.

I am pleased to inform you that this is not the last thing I plan, rather Quenox is just project #3 out of 5. I am paving the way to create a Sentinel! a type of big project that could even be used in a real work environment. but I am still working on version 0.1. thank you very much for reading.
