Inspiration

After a recent doctor visit I found out I was quite dehydrated and I didn’t even know it, as I felt “normal.” So I built Quenched, which sets up a custom hydration goal based on your body type, activity level, and current climate. Reminders are at the core of Quenched, as drinking water steadily through the day is key to good hydration.

What it does

Quenched is a hydration tracker that starts with a custom hydration goal based on your body type, activity level, and current climate. My goal with quenched was to create a dynamic & fun app that felt reactive to touch. The water in the app reacts to the tilt of the phone, and the Liquid Glass interface reflects and refracts the water as it rises to the top of the screen and you reach your daily goal. Notifications keep users coming back as well as reminding them of their new habit. And widgets allow for the user to quickly enter and keep track of their hydration without even having to open the app.

How we built it

I built Quenched in SwiftUI for iOS and Apple Watch, and then used Claude to assist in the porting the app to Kotlin on Android. On iOS platforms the app syncs with iCloud and if the user gives permissions, it will sync with Apple Health. On Android, the app uses a SQLite store internally and will sync records to Health Connect if the user gives permissions.

Challenges we ran into

A big one is keeping features in sync across platforms, as this is my first app available on both Android and iOS, and my first app ever in the Samsung Galaxy Store. Managing submissions and updates across all three is a pretty big task as they all have their own quirks.

Another one we have is getting Android users to convert, which seems to be a much harder task than iOS. I also put in a bit of spend into Google Ads which ended up being a waste as it seems a lot of the installs weren’t actual users, they would just open the app to the intro screen and not proceed further. I quickly learned I needed to set a different optimization objective for Google Ads campaigns and am still working on optimizing the android flow.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The iCloud sync between the Apple Watch and iPhone is now working perfectly - and it even updates widgets & complications live, bidirectionally which was something I've never worked on before in my iOS career, as most of my apps didn't contain watch counterparts.

What we learned

Submit early, and if you are going multiplatform - be ready for versions to get out of sync as review times can be all over the place, especially with today's AI app explosion.

What's next for Quenched - Water Tracker

A big one in the near term is preparation for iPhone Duo support. Thankfully we are already part of the way there since we have designs in the Android app that support foldables. Beyond that the next hurdle is to just keep pushing on new marketing channels.
