Inspirations & The Problems Addressed

Inspiration Website: Queering the Map
The problems we wanted to solve: When mentioning the lack of third spaces within the Celebrate Track discussion, we noted the challenges of finding local directly queer spaces or events. In addition, it can be challenging to find those community spaces for diversity or sustainability. Unfortunately, Google maps does not offer a lot of information around how queer friendly spaces are or how directly they are connected to the queer community.

Our Site

This is where Queer Maps is intended to come in. Built by the queer community for the queer community, it acts as a community board for events within your area. You can either submit your own events or view a map and board of events to participate in with tags to highlight its focus.

How We Built it

This was built utilizing Flask for backend and React for the frontend with MongoDB as the database for locations. We also utilized the google-maps API to ask for your location and show events in your area on a map to see how close activities are.

What's Next for Queer Map

The main thing we wanted to implement but didn't have the time for was a review system on the event board so that the community could provide feedback/ratings on events posted. Additionally, a chatbot could be added to help in your search or navigating the site.
