🎤 Inspiration Behind the World: WendstormXR’s Queenie’s Juke Joint

The soul of Queenie’s Juke Joint was sparked by two powerful influences: the film Sinners and my deep passion for exploring the history of Prohibition. There’s something timeless about the juke joint — a place where people of color came together not only to escape the weight of injustice, but to celebrate joy, creativity, resistance, and community through music and dance.

A recent visit to the Mob Museum in Las Vegas took that inspiration even further. Immersed in the real stories behind bootleggers, speakeasies, and cultural pushback, I found myself captivated by the secret codes, hidden rooms, and the constant tension between freedom and danger. These spaces weren’t just illegal — they were sacred. They were acts of rebellion wrapped in rhythm.

That visit inspired me to revisit and reimagine my 3D Juke Joint. I wanted to preserve its roots while making it more immersive — more playable. That’s when the idea hit:

What if players could feel the thrill of smuggling moonshine, dodging detection, and living the rebellion — all to a live soundtrack of jazz, blues, and soul?

🎮 What It Does

The current build of Queenie’s Juke Joint includes a mini-game where players search for hidden moonshine bottles and deposit them in a barrel. Each successful delivery earns a point, and the mechanic encourages exploration, movement, and engagement with the environment.

The goal is not just to recreate history visually, but to invite players to embody it.

🛠️ How We Built It

The mini-game was developed in Horizon Worlds using TypeScript. Initially, I tackled the scripting myself, but ran into multiple challenges trying to make everything work together. As a novice coder, I quickly realized I was doing too much at once.

Thankfully, my leagues Angel and Diane stepped in to help. They broke the system down and developed a simple, modular script that could track bottle pickups, and count deposits. Their support helped me learn that it's best to start simple and build outward.

🧩 Challenges I Ran Into

  • Overcomplicating the initial script logic
  • Debugging event triggers in Horizon Worlds
  • Structuring leaderboard updates without breaking gameplay
  • Learning to scale back features until the core mechanic worked

🌟 Accomplishments That I Am Proud Of

  • Launching a fully functional moonshine mini-game
  • Honoring cultural history with an immersive, interactive twist
  • Learning new coding skills through teamwork and experimentation
  • Building a space that invites both fun and reflection

📚 What I Learned

  • Simplicity is powerful. Start small, test, then iterate
  • Team collaboration is invaluable, especially when coding feels overwhelming
  • History can be brought to life not just through visuals, but through player actions

🔮 What’s Next for Queenie’s Juke Joint

The Juke Joint is just getting started.

Next, I plan to expand the experience with:

  • 🎓 Educational content on Prohibition, speakeasies, and resistance culture
  • 🧩 Additional mini-games tied to historical themes
  • 📖 Interactive storytelling zones where players can uncover hidden facts
  • 🎶 Dynamic music and dance areas that evolve with player progression
  • 🥇 A live leaderboard to track top moonshine collectors and add a competitive edge
  • A glowing moonshine drop reward when players collect 10 bottles, bringing the thrill of bootlegging to life

This world is my tribute to resilience, to culture, to creativity in the face of constraint.
And of course… to good music, good stories, and even better mischief. 🥃🎶
