Inspiration

Nobody neglects their house on purpose. They neglect it because the list of things a house needs is invisible until something breaks, and by then it is a bill instead of a chore.

Plenty of home maintenance guides are one long list of jobs. Almost none of them apply to you this month, and a few of them are urgent. Quarterday keeps the long list out of sight and shows you what is due now.

What it does

You answer up to thirteen questions once: what kind of home, how old, heating, water, basement, winters, what you have outside. The quiz skips what does not apply, so a flat can be as short as nine questions, while a detached house with a basement gets all thirteen.

From that it builds a maintenance schedule for the whole year and shows you only what is due now, on the Today tab. The Year tab lays the next twelve months out month by month, and it is part of Pro.

There are no accounts. The profile and the task history live on the device.

How we built it

An Expo and React Native app written in TypeScript. Everything runs on the phone: the profile and the task history are stored on the device with AsyncStorage, and there is no server for the app to talk to.

RevenueCat carries the upgrade: the free tier runs the quiz, the Today list, the logbook and one photo receipt in total, and Pro opens the full year plan, PDF export of the logbook, unlimited photo receipts, custom tasks and more than one home.

It started on Replit, where the first working version was built. I carried on from there and shipped it to both stores.

Challenges we ran into

Skip logic is where a quiz either earns trust or loses it. Ask someone in a flat about their gutters and they stop believing the rest of the list, so a condo never sees the gutter, basement or sump pump questions, and a home with no basement never sees the sump pump one.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The Today tab only shows what is due this month. That sounds trivial and it is most of the product: a maintenance app that shows you everything is just the long list again, with a nicer font.

What we learned

The phone is enough for an app like this. The quiz, the schedule and the record of what you have done all live on the device, so there is no server to run and no account to lose.

What's next for Quarterday

Reminders tied to the season rather than the calendar date, and a way to record what a job cost so the year has a running total.
