Inspiration
Covid-19 has forced billions of people across the global to go into Quarantine in order to flatten the curve. Studies have shown that isolation can lead to negative effects on mental health including feelings of anxiousness, depression, and powerlessness. In order to bring some light into people's life during this time, I created the "Quarantine Mood Booster" app which is a one-stop shop to make people smile whenever they are feeling down. I am a junior at Corona Del Mar High School and I am so excited to have participated in "Hack:Now!"

What it does
When you open the app, you are first greeted with an adorable main page with our mascot "Covi Bear" designed to immediately feel warm and fuzzy inside along with the buttons that read "Positivity", "Calm Me Down", and "Tell Me a Joke" -- the three ways that our app can make you smile. When you click on the "Positivity" button, it will take you to a page that will show you a randomly generated and stylized positive quote or affirmation that you can read out loud in order to remind you that things will get better and that you can make it through this time. When you click on the "Calm Me Down Button" it will take you to a page that contains a video player and upon pressing the "play" button it will show you a video that will lead you through a guided meditation for anxiety and inner peach that will help you calm down. Finally, when you click on "Tell me a Joke" (our favorite button ^_^), you will be taken to a page that will show you a randomly generated, hilarious corona-virus meme that was hand selected by me that will surely have you laughing on the floor. Each page of my app, features our adorable mascot "Covi Bear" in the background.
How I built it
I built this app using Java, XML (for the UI), and Android Studio. I used the Youtube Player v3 API from Google Cloud in order to embed the guided meditation video on the "Calm Me Down Page". This is my first time building a complete app with Android Studio with API's from Google Cloud :)
Challenges I ran into and My Favorite Parts
Because this was my first time building an app from start to finish on my own with multiple page and features, it was definitely challenging as I had to how to learn how to use Android Studio and figure out how to use Google Cloud to set up the Youtube API so I could play a youtube video. My favorite part of this process was finding all the fun images and content to put in my app and designing the user interface. In the process of building the "Quarantine Mood Booster", I found my own mood definitely boosted :)
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am so proud of competing in my first hackathon "Hack:Now" hosted by UC Berkeley Cal Hacks team and for building my first app as a high schooler! As a young girl interested in being an engineer when I grow up, this was a huge HUGE moment for me and made me feel like I CAN DO IT!! I also felt really good about spending my time in quarantine in a positive way and doing something that could possibly raise other people's spirits during this time.
What I learned
I learned how to use Android Studio to make apps and how to use the Google Cloud Youtube API.
What's next for Quarantine Mood Booster
I plan to upload my app to the Google Playstore so that other people can download "Quarantine Mood Booster" and have their spirits raised :)
