Inspiration
The theme of environmental sustainability inspired us to create an app that would reduce paper waste; namely, by allowing students to quartercard virtually. At Cornell, quartercarding and taping up flyers is how students spread information about their clubs, events, etc., but it often results in paper waste due to uninterested students leaving cards behind. Our app, Quard, will mitigate this waste by allowing students to upload their quartercards and flyers to the app.
What it does
Students can upload an image of their quartercard, or quard, for other students to view. These quards can be tagged, allowing students to filter them based on categories (academic, social, cultural, etc.). Quards can also be saved, for students to have easy access to them later. Each quard contains a title, description, contact information, and an expiration date.
How we built it
We designed the UI of Quard on Figma, and began coding the frontend of the app using Swift and the backend using SQLAlchemy and Python.
Challenges we ran into
A main challenge we ran into was motivation. Because this was our first hackathon, we weren't quite accustomed to working for so many hours in a row on one project, so our motivation flagged at some points. Another challenge was that we tended to bite off more than we could chew. We planned to have many features for Quard, some of which were not feasible in the time allotted for the hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of coming up with some great designs (in our opinion). We are also proud of making it through our first hackathon!
What we learned
We definitely learned that hackathons are not for the weak. However, we improved our knowledge of Figma and iOS development overall!
What's next for Quard
We would love to implement a location-based feature for uploading quards, so that users would be able to filter by location, just like flyers are taped/quartercards are passed out in different locations. Also, implementing a messaging system so users could message those who post quards would be next on our list of goals.
