Inspiration
With sentiments originating from the COVID-19 lockdown, we decided to create a solution to cure the boredom. Our first game, the Virus Attack, was inspired by the way we had to "run" from COVID-19. Toilet Paper Chaos was inspired by the toilet paper buying frenzies. Finally, Lockdown Wordle helps inform the population about technology terms.
What it does
Quarantine Games entertains you during lockdown with a variety of fun challenges. In Virus Attack, you dodge viruses, commemorating the global pandemic in a fun way. Toilet Paper Chaos lets you collect endless rolls, capturing the fun of pandemic memes. Lockdown Wordle tests your vocabulary with a lockdown twist, perfect for keeping your mind active during lockdown.
How we built it
We used VSCode as our IDE, and Github to manage our project. Justin built the Lockdown Wordle game, Ryan created Toilet Paper Chaos, Anthony made Virus Attack, and Austin composed music using GarageBand; fast-paced tracks for Ryan and Anthony's games and calm music for Justin’s.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first hackathon, and we faced some big challenges. Justin didn’t know any programming languages at the time and had to teach himself HTML, JS, and CSS. Game development was tough for both Ryan and Anthony since they’d never coded a game before, especially in JavaScript. Austin regretted rejecting some good ideas, because there weren't time to complete all.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we managed to finish three complete games under time pressure, despite having to learn many new languages and concepts we hadn’t known before. Most importantly, we worked hard, and the final project we created is something we’re truly proud of. This was our first time coding in such a pressured environment, and we pulled it off!
What we learned
Justin learned HTML, JS, and CSS. Ryan and Anthony learned how to do game development with JS, HTML, and CSS. Austin learned how to implement them in our software. And most importantly, we each learned how hackathons are and how to act under high time pressure environments such as hackathons.
What's next for Quarantine Games
We plan to perfect our existing games, adding more details and complexity. We also want to create more games. Although, we had an idea for a computer virus game where you cure computers, we unfortunately ran out of time. We’re excited about where this could go in the future.
