I run a hardware startup called Ottia. One of the most difficult and persistent questions we must answer is "how much is this product going to actually cost us to get into a user's hands?", factoring in sourcing, labor, shipping, warehousing, and distribution. Not answering this question accurately and with high enough fidelity early on has been the downfall of many startups, especially on Kickstarter. As such, it's been very important that we always know the answer to this question, which we do using a massive entangled network of spreadsheets which take hours to update if we want to even change a component. This forces us to have to chose between iterating quickly or losing the accuracy in our financial model, which is often used to inform our design iterations.

Quantist was designed to largely automate this process. Using a straightforward and legible interface, the typical workflow is:

  • Enter basic information about all of your parts and where they're originating from
  • Group your parts into assemblies by answering the questions: "all these parts have to get put together somewhere - where? by who?"
  • Setup logistic providers between each of the locations, with the masses, volumes, and associated freight rates automatically calculated.
  • View detailed breakdowns of the cost of your product.
