Inspiration

During the pandemic, my father lost his job. I remember it being so hard for him to find a new job after being with the same company for years, he didn't really know where to start. After seeing his struggle, I was inspired to create a website that not only provides job resources but is also welcoming to those in search of a new job.

What it does

My website has 4 pages. On the Home page, it has the mission statement and social media links. The second page is the Career page. Users can take a quiz to see what career path fits them best. They can also learn more about different careers. The third page is the Job Map. This page allows users to enter their zip code and find businesses near them. This gives users a starting point for their job search. The final page is the Resume and Interview Help page. This page has a built-in interview bot that helps users prepare for and familiarize themselves with popular interview questions. The next element of this page is the option for users to anonymously submit their resumes. This is meant to tackle hiring discrimination. Users can upload their resume and only the relevant qualifications will be sent to employers. [Note: This feature is not fully functional.]

How I built it

I used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to build my website. The main components of the website were coded with HTML. I used CSS for design and Javascript for functionality. I am a beginner coder, so I referenced youtube tutorials for some of the components of my website.

Challenges I ran into

I mainly had trouble with the format of my website. I am new to CSS, so I frequently had issues with spacing and the positioning of the elements of my website. I also faced some challenges when adding the map and search bar to my website.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am really proud of the finished product. Though, I am really proud of myself for figuring out how to add the map to my code, as I struggled for a while with it.

What I learned

I definitely improved my HTML, CSS, and Javascript skills, but I also learned how important patience is in coding. There are many little pieces to make in order to create the whole product. My other takeaway would be that I learned how to persevere. There were times when I was very frustrated with my code, but in the end, I pushed through and finished!

What's next for Qualified! Job Network

I have lots of ideas for improving Qualified! Job Network. Mainly, I want to work on the functionality of the anonymous job application and the job map. I also want to program the interview bot, to have a wider range of responses.
