On a recent visit to a neighbourhood provision shop selling essentials, we observed the solo shop owner shouting and struggling to enforce safe distancing measures. There were 15 people in 2 small aisles when there should have been no more than 4 people at one time in the shop.
Post Circuit Breaker, when normal economic activity resumes, we will see increased people flow and crowds in various locations. How do we ensure safe distancing while businesses of all scales and sizes conduct their normal activities?
Our co-founder Medha realised we needed a solution to control people flow.

How we built it
Our goal was to build safe distancing platform APIs that can enable on-demand quick deployment of virtual queuing services in many custom scenarios.
One sub-team worked on the back-end APIs, written in Java and SQL. Another sub-team developed user-facing Android apps to rigorously test the APIs and ensure all use-cases work and also managed cloud infrastructure activities.
Challenges we ran into
We faced a steep learning curve to understand and leverage the capabilities of the Google platform and implement a proper security model.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a Minimum Viable Product (Version 1) available today. It is ready for customer trials and deployment.
What we learned
We have learned a lot about the technical capabilities of the Google Cloud Infrastructure including APIs, Google Security Model and Android App Development.
What's next for qSafe
- Partner with customer organisations to help them enforce safe distancing using our platform
- Harden the platform further for large scale deployment
- Integrate with existing contact tracing platforms through APIs where required
