Inspiration
The project of building an accessible language support service in airports and subways was inspired from personal family experience. Due to my parents having a language barrier, they would always struggle in transportation as they could not read or understand either English or French. Moreover growing up using the public transportation and occasionally travelling, I realized that there's a lack of language support services for those who cannot speak English or French in Canada.
What it does
The QR code directs the users to a website that will then prompt the users to choose their required language, and send them to a home page where they can pick the information they need to support them in their journey in the airport or subway station.
How we built it
This is only a pitch, but it can be built using many programming languages such as Java to help incorporate all the ideas and make it into a reality.
Challenges we ran into
A challenge I ran into while coming up with this idea is trying to find statistical data of non-English or non-French speakers usage of the TTC subway station or the Toronto Pearson Airport.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of making an idea that came from my own personal experience to help address the issue of the inaccessibility of a diverse set of languages in our common modes of transportation.
What we learned
I have learned that it really is not easy to generate an idea and many factors must come into play to help make an idea that I personally feel confident presenting and working with.
What's next for QR Code For Language Support in Airport & Subway Stations
The next goal is to begin creating the website to contain the basic information in English, which can then be translated into the many diverse languages in Canada. Furthermore, after that is implemented, a QR code will be generated to then hopefully be in all Canadian subway stations and airports.
