Inspiration
We wanted to create a fun, modern way for kids and families to experience the beauty of Qixi — blending mythology, poetry, and tradition into something they can sing, move to, and remember.
What it does
It turns the Qixi Festival into a musical learning experience: a catchy song that weaves in the Cowherd & Weaver Girl myth, classical poetry medleys, and traditions from across China, paired with a mini culture lesson for family or classroom use.
How we built it
We combined research on Qixi folklore and regional customs with curated classical poems, then crafted a melody that fits both narration and sing-along moments. We produced bilingual lyrics, arranged the music, and designed a short educational video to tie everything together.
- ChatGPT to create first draft of lyrics that we then iterated on heavily.
- Midjourney to create the images.
- Dreamina to create the video clips.
- CapCut for video production, editing, and voice-over.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing cultural accuracy with kid-friendly simplicity, integrating multiple classical poems smoothly into one melody, and keeping the pace engaging without losing the emotional feel of Qixi.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a song that feels both educational and magical — one that kids can remember, parents can teach with, and teachers can use to introduce Chinese culture and poetry in a fresh way.
What we learned
That traditional culture resonates deeply when delivered through modern, playful formats. Music + storytelling + poetry is an especially powerful combo for bilingual and multicultural learning.
What's next for Qixi Song
More culture-through-music content: festival series (Mid-Autumn, Dragon Boat, Lunar New Year), printable activity sheets, a classroom version, and a family-friendly playlist that helps children fall in love with Chinese traditions all year round.
