When I arrived to Berlin in 2009 I had no idea which neighborhood is better for me and it tooks some time to find something good. Nowadays amounts of data available are so much bigger. Given the right tool one can have a much deeper insight into the city.

What it does

"Where to live in Berlin" is a tool which allows you to explore the city in a lot of dimensions. You will be able to visualize various qualities of living in the city which will help you to pick new home in an area which satisfies you the most.

How we built it

This project is a mashup of several data sources, engines and APIs:

  • Daimler Parking Data
  • Esri ArcGIS
  • OpenStreetMap
  • Geoportal / Land Berlin
  • Leaflet
  • ElasticSearch
  • Java, PHP

Challenges we ran into

We decided to focus on actual buildings of Berlin. Instead of just using raw data we had to recalculate it through the prism of proximity to the datapoints. Several technical optimisations had to be made in order to complete the project in time.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

To combine several different visualization types on one screen.

What we learned

That strict prioritisation and ability to quickly adopt to new problems are the key to achieve a working product within given time.

What's next for "Where to live in Berlin"

Next steps will be to include even more different datasets, cover other cities as well as conquer the world. This tool shall become essential in starting your search for new home and will forward you to real objects at the market (e.g. ImmobilienScout24, ImmoWelt etc.), and this will be our monetization model.
