Inspiration
What inspired us to develop Qhawe-Africa was witnessing the high rate of unemployment among our peers. Many of our friends and classmates, despite having earned their degrees, were struggling to find employment. We saw countless graduates facing rejection without any feedback from employers, leading to a sense of hopelessness and frustration. This reality deeply moved us, and we felt compelled to create a solution that would not only help graduates find jobs but also assist employers in discovering talented individuals without the hassle of lengthy search processes. Our mission is to bridge the gap between graduates and employers, ensuring that the potential of Africa's youth is fully realized.
What it does
Qhawe-Africa is a specialized platform designed to address the high unemployment rates among African graduates. It provides a user-friendly mobile application and website that connects graduates with potential employers. The platform uses a sophisticated matching algorithm to pair job seekers with relevant job openings, enables automatic job applications, facilitates interview scheduling, and provides feedback after interviews. Additionally, Qhawe-Africa offers a range of resources and services such as professional development, mentorship and coaching, job readiness training, networking events, recruitment services, skill assessments, and freelance and project work opportunities.
How we built it
The mobile application and website will require a mix of front-end and back-end programming languages. The development team may consider using programming languages such as C#, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
The platform will require a database management system to store and manage users' data, job vacancies, and employer information. The development team may consider using open-source database management systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB.
Challenges we ran into
Building Qhawe-Africa was not without its challenges. One major challenge was ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of the matching algorithm. We had to continuously refine the algorithm to improve its performance. Another challenge was data privacy and security; we needed to ensure that user data was protected according to best practices. Additionally, fostering strong partnerships with local businesses and organizations required significant effort and negotiation to ensure mutual benefits. Finally, promoting the platform across diverse regions in Africa and reaching both urban and rural graduates posed a significant marketing challenge.
The final challenge which is still ongoing is trying to link the frontend to the backend of the website/app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed a demo website that effectively matches students with job opportunities. This initial version of Qhawe-Africa demonstrates our concept and provides a foundation for further development. The positive feedback from early users has been encouraging, and it validates our efforts to address the unemployment crisis among African graduates. Establishing a functional prototype is a significant milestone, and it sets the stage for future enhancements and broader adoption
What we learned
Throughout this project, we learned the importance of understanding the needs of our target users and designing solutions that directly address these needs. We gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by graduates in the job market, which informed our development process. Additionally, we learned about the complexities of developing a sophisticated matching algorithm and the importance of data privacy and security. We also discovered the value of building strong partnerships and effective marketing strategies to promote our platform. This project has equipped us with practical skills and knowledge that will benefit us in our future careers.
What's next for Qhawe-Africa
Looking ahead, we have several plans for the future of Qhawe-Africa. Our next steps include refining our code to transition from a demo website to a fully functional, publishable platform. We aim to integrate APIs to enhance the platform's capabilities and incorporate AI technologies to further improve the matching algorithm and provide more personalized job recommendations. We will also focus on expanding our network of partnerships with local businesses and organizations to offer even more job opportunities for graduates. Additionally, we plan to launch targeted marketing campaigns to reach a broader audience across Africa, ensuring that Qhawe-Africa becomes the go-to platform for African graduates seeking employment and professional growth.
