Inspiration
Living in Khartoum, I constantly witnessed neighbors struggling to find reliable home service providers through scattered Facebook groups and word-of-mouth networks. The process was time-consuming, risky, and fragmented across different communities. When my water pump failed during Ramadan and I spent hours searching for a trustworthy technician, I realized Sudan needed a unified platform connecting homeowners with verified service providers. This frustration sparked Qarib - meaning "near" in Arabic - to bring quality services closer to those who need them in our rapidly growing urban centers.
What it does
Qarib is a comprehensive web platform connecting Sudanese residents with verified home service providers in one marketplace. Users can search, compare, and book services from plumbing to cleaning through an intuitive interface featuring real-time messaging, secure payments, and robust reviews. Service providers manage professional profiles, scheduling, and customer relationships. With Arabic/English support and mobile-responsive design optimized for local internet conditions, Qarib offers transparent pricing, verified credentials, and quality assurance, eliminating the traditional hassle of finding reliable home service professionals across Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri.
How we built it
We developed Qarib using React/Next.js frontend, Node.js/Express backend, and PostgreSQL database. The tech stack includes JWT authentication, local payment gateway integration, Socket.io for real-time messaging, and Redis caching. Built with microservices architecture on local hosting solutions, we prioritized mobile-first design using Tailwind CSS. Development involved extensive Sudanese market research. we prototyped Qarib through firebase studio.
Challenges we ran into
Technical challenges included implementing real-time communication despite unreliable internet connectivity and optimizing for low-bandwidth mobile networks common in Sudan.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our smart matching algorithm and quality assurance system have set new standards for service marketplace reliability
What we learned
Building Qarib taught me that successful platforms require more than just technical excellence - they need deep market understanding, user empathy, and continuous iteration based on feedback.
