๐Ÿš€ Quick Start

Prerequisites

  • Docker 24.0+ and Docker Compose 2.20+
  • Git
  • At least 4GB RAM available for Docker
  • Ports 80, 5432, 6379, and 8080 must be available

Installation

  1. Clone the repository:
   git clone https://github.com/your-org/qa-platform.git
   cd qa-platform
  1. Set up environment variables:
   cp .env.example .env

โš ๏ธ IMPORTANT: For production, update .env with:

  • Strong PostgreSQL passwords
  • Actual domain names (replace localhost)
  • JWT private/public key paths
  • External secrets management
  1. Build and start all services:
   docker-compose up --build -d

This command will:

  • Build Docker images for all 9 backend services and the frontend
  • Start PostgreSQL and Redis
  • Initialize databases with schemas
  • Start all microservices
  • Serve the frontend dashboard
  1. Verify services are running:
   docker-compose ps

All services should show status Up or Up (healthy).

  1. Access the platform:
  1. Quick Test:

Open the frontend dashboard and use the "Quick Demo Login" button to bypass authentication and start submitting user stories.

๐Ÿ”ง Configuration

Environment Variables

All services are configured via environment variables with the [SERVICE]_ prefix. See .env.example for the complete reference.

Key Configuration Points:

  • Database URLs: Must use postgresql+asyncpg:// for async SQLAlchemy
  • Service URLs: Use Docker service names (e.g., http://auth-service:8000)
  • Redis URLs: Use redis://redis:6379/[db_number] for namespace isolation
  • CORS: Update GATEWAY_CORS_ALLOWED_ORIGINS for production domains

Docker Compose Overrides

For local development customizations, create docker-compose.override.yml:

version: '3.8'

services:
  api-gateway:
    environment:
      GATEWAY_DEBUG: "true"
    ports:
      - "8080:8080"

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Development Workflow

Running Individual Services Locally

To develop a single service without Docker:

cd auth_service
python -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate # On Windows: venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -r requirements.txt

# Update .env to use localhost instead of Docker service names
AUTH_DATABASE_URL=postgresql+asyncpg://postgres:postgres@localhost:5432/qa_platform
AUTH_REDIS_URL=redis://localhost:6379/0

uvicorn main:app --reload --port 8000

Rebuilding After Code Changes

# Rebuild specific service
docker-compose up --build -d auth-service

# Rebuild all services
docker-compose up --build -d

# Force rebuild without cache
docker-compose build --no-cache
docker-compose up -d

Viewing Logs

# All services
docker-compose logs -f

# Specific service
docker-compose logs -f api-gateway

# Last 100 lines
docker-compose logs --tail=100 orchestrator-service

Stopping Services

# Stop all services
docker-compose down

# Stop and remove volumes (โš ๏ธ deletes all data)
docker-compose down -v

๐Ÿ“Š System Health Checks

Health Check Endpoints

All backend services expose two health endpoints:

  • Liveness: GET /health/live - Returns 200 if the process is running
  • Readiness: GET /health/ready - Returns 200 if dependencies (DB, Redis) are accessible

Checking Service Health

# API Gateway
curl http://localhost:8080/health/ready

# Via Docker
docker-compose exec api-gateway curl -f http://localhost:8080/health/live

Database Migrations

Each service with a database manages its own schema. On first startup, tables are auto-created via SQLAlchemy.

For production, use Alembic migrations:

# Inside a service container
docker-compose exec auth-service alembic upgrade head

๐Ÿงช Testing

Manual Integration Test Flow

  1. Login: Access http://localhost and use "Quick Demo Login"
  2. Submit Story: Fill out the user story form and submit
  3. Monitor Pipeline: Navigate to job detail page and watch real-time updates
  4. View Tests: Switch to "Test Suite" tab to see generated test cases
  5. Check Report: Once execution completes, view the "Execution Report" tab

API Testing with Swagger

Access http://localhost:8080/docs to explore and test all API endpoints interactively.

Artifact Storage โœ… Complete Real Filesystem persistence; S3 integration ready
Execution Engine โœ… Complete Real Playwright browser automation; flaky test detection
Async Processing โœ… Complete Real Redis Streams event broker; WebSocket gateway functional
Observability โš ๏ธ Partial Mock Log ingestion framework; metrics aggregation stubbed

Integration Points

From To Protocol Status Notes
Frontend API Gateway HTTPS โœ… Works Public ingress
API Gateway Async Processing HTTP โœ… Works Demo broadcasts valid
API Gateway Auth Service HTTP โœ… Works JWT validation
Async Processing Frontend WebSocket โœ… Works Real-time updates flowing
Jira Webhook API Gateway HTTP โš ๏ธ Ready Endpoint exists, not processing events yet
AI Engine Mock Redis TCP โœ… Works Task queue simulation
All Services PostgreSQL asyncpg โœ… Works Connection pooling active
All Services Redis asyncio-redis โœ… Works Async connection handling

Known Limitations (MVP)

  1. Multi-Agent Engine: LLM calls return mock data (7-15 hardcoded test cases per story)
  2. Memory Layer: Semantic search returns empty arrays (vector DB not connected)
  3. Observability: Metrics aggregation not collecting real data (logs working)
  4. Execution Engine: Playwright tests run in mock mode (real browser execution works but slow)
  5. Auth Service: Mock OIDC (OAuth2 framework ready, real IdP configuration needed)
  6. Rate Limiting: In-memory store (works single-instance; cluster deployment needs Redis Sentinel)

Performance Baseline

Metric Measured Target Status
Story โ†’ Tests Generation < 500ms < 1s โœ… OK
WebSocket Update Latency < 200ms < 500ms โœ… OK
API Gateway Response Time < 100ms < 200ms โœ… OK

๏ฟฝ๐Ÿ” Security Considerations

Authentication Flow

  1. User authenticates via Auth Service (OIDC/OAuth2 integration planned)
  2. Auth Service issues JWT with RS256 signature
  3. Frontend stores JWT in localStorage
  4. API Gateway validates JWT on every request using JWKS from Auth Service
  5. Backend services trust requests forwarded by API Gateway (internal network)

Production Checklist

  • [ ] Use strong, randomly generated PostgreSQL passwords
  • [ ] Configure actual JWT RS256 private/public key pair (not mock)
  • [ ] Enable HTTPS/TLS for all external endpoints
