We used Tailwind CSS and HTML to make a website to virtually connect volunteer tutors with students. This is important because students who can't afford personal tuition often suffer academically. By making this free, we break down the boundary between students of different economic backgrounds.)

There are 4.2 million children living in poverty in the UK. Approximately 6 per cent of school children in the UK are educated in private schools, and yet in universities they make up more than 30% of the students. "Pupils eligible for free school meals (FSM) made less progress between 11 and 16 years old than those not eligible for FSM, with national average Progress 8 scores of -0.53 and 0.06 respectively." - Office for National Statistics

Growing up in poverty can have negative consequences for children's well-being and future life prospects, such as employment and earning opportunities. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this cause has never been more important.

Our Aim: We want to close the education gap; the difference between the education of children whose parents can afford tutoring and of those whose parents cannot. Giving children access to learning materials and one-on-one tutors gives them the chance to break the poverty cycle. The option for tutoring and private education often sets students from wealthier families ahead of those who cannot afford such things. Python Pilgrims has been working with the University of Edinburgh and Newcastle University to bring together this project. We hope to have 1500 volunteers active on the website by December, and are ambitious to widen the awareness. Please consider donating to our Virgin Money Giving Fundraiser, and share this website to those who are looking to volunteer.
