What it is
Purrfect Fit is a block puzzle where every piece is a cat. Set cats on an 8 by 8 board, fill a row or a column to clear it, and when a clear cuts a cat in two, the leftover pieces of the same colour snuggle into a brand new cat. It is live on Google Play and the App Store.
What we built for Fire TV during the hackathon
The phone game is played by dragging. A TV has no touch, so we rebuilt how you play it:
- Left and right move a ring along the tray of cats.
- The middle button lifts the cat onto the board, the arrows walk it one square at a time, and the middle button sets it down. The board shows where it fits before you press.
- Back puts a lifted cat back in the tray.
- Up from the tray reaches the toys and the home button, and down comes back.
- A game controller works too: the D-pad or the left stick moves, A picks, B goes back.
- Every menu works with the remote too: a gold frame shows which button you are on, sliders take left and right, and long lists scroll as you go.
- The TV build has no adverts and nothing to buy.
- On a TV the board stands on the left, as tall as the screen, and the score, toys and tray stand on the right, so the cats are easy to see from the sofa.
- Family turns: pick 2, 3 or 4 players on the home screen and pass the remote round. Each cat you set down scores for you, the list on the right says whose turn it is, and at the end it says who won. A TV is shared, so the game is too.
How we built it
Unity 6, the Unity Input System for the remote, and the Android TV emulator for testing. The game is tested end to end on every change by a script that plays it in the editor, including the remote: it lifts a cat, walks it to a square and sets it down, and on the bad path it tries a taken square, walks into the walls and presses Back. Family turns are tested the same way: two players each score their own cat, and on the bad path a cat that does not fit gives no points and the turn stays put.
