Inspiration

Science shows that the biggest health challenges in the western world are because of excess ultra-processed food and sugar intake. Many countries spend third of their budget into health care already, and it is only getting worse every year.

I quit junk food myself couple years ago and it made tremendous change in my physical and mental wellbeing. Now I want that everyone can do the same with the help of encouraging virtual friend.

What it does

Pureo is a virtual food friend who helps you to quit ultra-processed food and sugar. You feed your Pureo friend by taking picture of the foods you eat.

There are science-based daily limits for the amount of ultra-processed food (UPF) and sugar you are allowed to eat. The goal is to stay below the research-based limits for both UPF and sugar.

The app works also as a calorie counter so you can make sure you get enough proteins and your macros are in balance.

How we built it

Pureo was built with the focus on the user experience. The amazing part of the app is naturally the 3D shiba inu called Pureo.

The app itself is built with Expo / React Native. Backend is made with Next.js and all the data is stored in Supabase. Payments are naturally done with Revenuecat.

Challenges we ran into

Creating the dog character was quite challenging, as I didn't want to use SVG or 2D images for it. I had to use custom Swift bridge to render the dog without any glitches and to ensure smoothness. Getting this to work was quite a challenge as I had never touched Swift before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Everyone else (including me) is doing a lot of apps with AI, but I decided to make the app 100% myself without vibe coding. Well, I did have Cursor autocomplete on but I didn't prompt it even once.

What we learned

Building a full food tracker that is actually smooth to use takes more time than projected. I was sure that I'm done in one month, but it took me the evenings of two months.

What's next for Pureo

Next updates for Pureo include more emotions and reactions for the shiba inu, to make the experience even more encouraging. Plan is also to make the food scanning more insightful, and allow users to find out how other changes in their diet could improve their wellbeing, e.g. by highlighting foods high in histamine. Android version & localisations are also coming soon.

I will also start marketing the app in social media accounts and create influencer collaborations.

I really hope that Pureo helps people to improve their life quality through better diet.
