Inspiration
We're all spending our fall semester online and so we all wanted to stay connected with what Purdue had to offer and for us that meant looking around and finding places to eat.
What it does
The app gives you a bunch of questions to answer and based on those questions, it will give you a recommendation for the restaurant/cafe that you should get food from at Purdue.
How we built it
We built it using Flutter.
Challenges we ran into
Unfortunately, we did face a lot of challenges throughout our entire hacking process. For one, we all had trouble setting up our Flutters and Android Studios. One of our team members couldn’t even find the plug in, and another two of us were experiencing set up errors and it took us several hours to resolve. The worst part was that we had already spent so much time setting up but then we also had to learn how to use Flutter before we could even start implementing our logic and code. Although it was very taxing and frustrating at times, we were still able to implement a small portion of our code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although our project is incomplete, I think we are all still proud of ourselves. This was all of ours’ first hackathon ever. We are also all beginners in coding and have never used the platforms and softwares that we used for this project. So we’re proud of the fact that even through hours of errors and problems setting up, we still persevered and at least got a little bit done. While we would’ve liked things to have gone smoother, we’re still proud that we learned a lot at this hackathon.
What we learned
Through this project we learned about the basics of app development and how to use the flutter application to create an app. We also learned about how to use the Dart language as this was something entirely new to us. This was the first hackathon for all of us so we learned about how we can use our time better with future hackathons and how they function.
What's next for Purdue Food Recommendation
In the future, with our app we hope to be able to implement all of our questions to create recommendations. We also hope to improve our app with more questions we could add on to create better recommendations. I think in the future we could expand our app to other on campus activities besides food like recommending clubs or organizations.
