Inspiration
Cheese waited 147 days in a shelter kennel and barely went outside. Seeing her wait made me question why fostering systems were slow and scattered. Shelter teams were drowning in forms and families who wanted dogs were skipping fostering because it was inconvenient. That moment pushed me to start building a better way for shelters and foster families to connect so dogs could leave kennels more often and socialize safely.
What it does
PuppyBorrow is an app concept that helps shelters list dogs for short foster visits of a few hours, a day, or a weekend, while also supporting longer fostering. Foster families complete identity checks and references before sending requests. Shelters review foster applications quickly, message families inside the app, and approve based on a trust score. Dogs get more time outside kennels, more socialization, and more visibility to the right families. Users can also utilize Google Gemini to talk to a "dog coach" that gives them tips and tricks on how to best work with their shelter dog!
How we built it
I built the first prototype alone using basic web tools. I researched ethical verification flows, tested identity and reference collection, designed clean puppy profile cards with temperament and medical tags, connected a foster request queue, and built in-app messaging so shelters and families could communicate in one place without needing multiple platforms.
Challenges we ran into
- No engineering team at the start
- No funding to begin development
- Learning backend systems, databases, and verification alone
- Designing one system that fits shelters that operate differently
- Balancing development time with side work to pay bills
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- First working prototype built solo
- Positive early feedback from shelter volunteers and foster families in demos
- A privacy-safe verification flow shelters trust
- A foster request queue that is easy for shelter teams to manage
What I learned
Convenience changes participation. Short fosters improve dog socialization. Better screening reduces adoption returns. Families adopt when confidence is high. Confidence grows from real foster time with clear expectations and safe verified communication. Also very impressed with Google Studio model, made it very easy to build a well-made application.
What's next for Puppy Borrow
Next steps include adding more shelter management tools, improving foster matching, and scaling access to more shelters so more dogs leave kennels faster, socialize safely, and find the right permanent homes with less friction for families and shelter teams.
