💡 Inspiration

Every city faces everyday civic problems—from potholes and damaged roads to waste management and drainage issues. But identifying a problem is only the first step. Citizens also need a clear way to report it, track its progress, and understand what happens next.

We envisioned PuneSetu (पुणे सेतू) as a bridge between citizens and municipal services in Pune, Maharashtra. Our goal is to make civic participation more accessible, transparent, and accountable through technology.

🚀 What It Does

PuneSetu is a civic-tech platform designed to bring citizens, municipal officers, and administrators into one connected grievance-management system.

  • Report Civic Issues: Citizens can report neighbourhood problems with relevant descriptions, categories, locations, and supporting evidence.
  • Track Progress: Track grievances using their reference numbers and view available status updates.
  • Explore Civic Issues: Map-based interfaces help users understand the geographical context of reported problems.
  • Manage Grievances: Dedicated officer workflows support reviewing assigned complaints and recording appropriate updates.
  • Administrative Oversight: Role-specific management interfaces support grievance monitoring and assignment workflows.
  • Multilingual Accessibility: English, Marathi, and Hindi are the intended supported languages, helping make civic services more accessible to a wider community.

PuneSetu aims to make civic grievance management easier to navigate while helping citizens stay informed about the issues they report.

🛠️ How We Built It

We approached PuneSetu as a web-based civic platform with distinct experiences for citizens, municipal officers, and administrators.

The application uses reusable interface components and a role-based architecture to organize the different workflows. Its design brings together grievance reporting, tracking, location-based interfaces, and management dashboards within a consistent user experience.

We focused on building an interface that feels approachable to ordinary citizens while providing structured workflows for municipal operations. We also considered responsive layouts and multilingual accessibility so that the platform can serve users across different devices and language preferences.

🧩 Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was bringing several interconnected workflows into a single application without making the experience unnecessarily complicated.

We worked on connecting user roles with appropriate permissions, keeping grievance information consistent across different dashboards, and making maps, image handling, navigation, and responsive layouts work together.

Another challenge was localization. Supporting multiple languages requires more than translating a few buttons—it also means accounting for different text lengths, readable typography, and consistent terminology throughout the interface.

These challenges reinforced the importance of testing complete user journeys rather than evaluating individual screens in isolation.

📚 What We Learned

Building PuneSetu strengthened our understanding of full-stack application development, role-based access control, user-interface design, data management, and the importance of connecting frontend interactions to actual backend operations.

We also learned that a useful civic platform needs more than an attractive interface. Reliability, privacy, accessibility, clear feedback, and transparent status information are essential to building user trust.

🔮 What's Next

We want to continue improving PuneSetu by strengthening end-to-end grievance workflows, improving accessibility across English, Marathi, and Hindi, refining the map experience, and making notifications and status updates more reliable.

Future possibilities include verified municipal data, improved analytics, and authorized integrations with relevant civic-service systems.

Our long-term vision is simple: make it easier for citizens to raise their voices and easier for civic teams to manage the problems that shape everyday life in Pune.
