Halloween games often fall into two categories: either overly complex with confusing mechanics, or too simple and quickly boring. I wanted to create a game that hits the sweet spot - instantly understandable but progressively challenging. The goal was to make something that anyone can pick up and play within seconds, but still provides enough depth and challenge to keep players engaged.
The Solution
Pumpkin Panic! is a one-button (actually one-mouse) arcade game where you control a ghost catching falling pumpkins while dodging bombs. Here's how I solved the engagement challenge:
Core Mechanics
• Intuitive Controls: Mouse movement only - your ghost follows your cursor instantly • Progressive Difficulty: Starts easy, becomes increasingly challenging with faster spawns, smarter bombs, and more chaos • Risk vs Reward: Power-ups offer temporary advantages but require skilled positioning to collect • Combo System: Chain pumpkin catches for multiplied scores, encouraging aggressive play
