Inspiration
Puerto Rico faces recurring service disruptions caused by hurricanes, power outages, flooding, and infrastructure challenges. During these events, citizens often know where a clinic or pharmacy is located but do not know whether it is actually operating or able to help.
Pulso PR was inspired by a simple question:
"If my usual healthcare service is unavailable, where can I find verified help right now?"
The project aims to improve healthcare continuity and community resilience by connecting citizens with healthcare providers, organizations, and community resources that have recently confirmed their availability.
What it does
Pulso PR is a healthcare continuity and community support platform that helps citizens:
- Find healthcare and community resources.
- Search by municipality, need, service, or provider type.
- View verified service availability.
- See when information was last confirmed.
- Contact providers.
- Submit non-emergency assistance requests.
- Track request status.
Providers can:
- Manage their profiles.
- Update operational status.
- Publish available services.
- Receive and respond to assistance requests.
Administrators can:
- Monitor service availability.
- View requests and response activity.
- Identify outdated information.
- Generate operational insights.

- Designing around connectivity limitations during emergencies.
- Preventing misinformation from unverified reports.
- Creating a trustworthy verification model.
- Designing an architecture that can scale from a demo to production.
- Integrating healthcare continuity concepts without introducing unnecessary medical or regulatory complexity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designed a complete end-to-end coordination workflow.
- Created a platform that serves citizens, providers, and administrators.
- Built a mobile-first architecture.
- Leveraged Appwrite as a complete backend platform.
- Reduced infrastructure complexity by avoiding custom backend services.
- Focused on verified information instead of crowdsourced assumptions.
- Created a solution tailored to Puerto Rico’s resilience challenges.
- Built a practical MVP capable of demonstrating real-world value.
What we learned
- Simplicity beats feature overload.
- Trust and data verification matter more than AI-generated confidence scores.
- Citizens need actionable information, not just data.
- Healthcare continuity is a broader challenge than healthcare access alone.
- Community organizations play a critical role during disruptions.
- AI delivers the most value when assisting human decision-making.
- A focused workflow is more effective than trying to solve every problem at once.
