Inspiration

Building healthier habits sounds simple but consistency is where most people struggle. There are plenty of apps that can tell us what we should do but very few make the actual process of doing it feel simple and achievable.

Pufo started from a very everyday problem. A better day often begins with very small decisions. Getting out of bed when the alarm rings. Drinking water in the morning. Moving a little. Eating something better. Staying consistent with the things we already know are good for us.

We wanted to build something around those small moments instead of creating another complicated wellness platform filled with dashboards and information.

The idea behind Pufo is that people do not necessarily need more goals or more information. They need help taking the next small step and a reason to keep coming back tomorrow.

That became the foundation of Pufo. Make the morning more intentional. Turn simple actions into small quests. Make progress visible. Make meal tracking easier with AI. Then bring these experiences together into one daily routine.

The philosophy is simple. Progress does not have to be perfect to be meaningful.

What it does

Pufo is a wellness and habit building app that brings smart mornings daily quests habit tracking streaks and AI powered meal tracking into one experience.

The day starts with the Smart Alarm. Users can configure their alarm and choose how they want to wake up. Instead of treating the alarm as the end of sleep it becomes the first interaction with the Pufo experience.

Morning Quests then turn the beginning of the day into a series of simple actions. Users can complete small activities and build momentum instead of being presented with an overwhelming wellness plan.

As users continue completing their routines Pufo keeps track of progress and streaks. This gives users a simple visual way to see that they are showing up consistently.

Pufo also brings the same simplicity to food tracking. Users can capture a meal using their camera or log it manually. AI then helps identify the meal and provides estimated nutrition information.

Users can explore their nutrition history and see their eating patterns over time. This creates a connection between the actions they take in the morning and the choices they make throughout the rest of the day.

Together these features make Pufo more than an alarm app or a nutrition tracker. It is designed as a daily wellness companion that connects several small parts of a routine into one experience.

How we built it

We built Pufo as a mobile first wellness product combining a modern mobile application, cloud infrastructure, AI services, notification infrastructure, analytics and subscription technology.

Pufo Arch

The application is built with React Native and TypeScript, allowing us to develop the core mobile experience with a shared codebase while still taking advantage of native device capabilities where needed.

The backend uses Supabase for authentication, database services and backend infrastructure. This gives Pufo a scalable foundation for user accounts, application data and the different services that power the experience.

AI is used primarily for meal understanding and estimated nutrition analysis. The mobile application sends the relevant meal information through our secure backend and the AI processing happens away from the client so sensitive service credentials and AI integrations are not exposed directly inside the application.

We also integrated OneSignal for push notifications and future retention experiences. Since Pufo is built around daily routines, notifications can help bring users back at useful moments and support the habit loop without making the experience feel like constant marketing.

RevenueCat powers Pufo+'s subscription infrastructure. It handles the subscription lifecycle, monthly and yearly offerings and entitlement management, giving us a reliable foundation for monetization while keeping subscription logic separate from the core application experience.

Design and interaction

Design was a major part of how we approached Pufo. We did not want it to look like a traditional health or medical application filled with dense dashboards and numbers.

The interface is designed to feel friendly, lightweight and approachable. We use clear visual hierarchy, focused screens, progress indicators, streaks and small moments of feedback to make each interaction easy to understand.

The Morning Quest experience is particularly important to the design. Instead of presenting a long checklist of wellness goals, actions are broken into small achievable steps. Completing an action creates an immediate sense of progress and gives the user a reason to continue.

The Pufo companion also adds personality to the experience. It provides a visual identity that can evolve with the user's journey and makes the application feel more like a daily companion than a traditional utility.

We also designed the meal tracking experience around reducing friction. The user can move from capturing a meal to seeing estimated nutrition information without navigating through a complicated food database.

Across the product we focused on consistent visual language, smooth transitions, clear states and rewarding feedback so that alarms, quests, habits, meals and progress feel like parts of one connected experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was deciding what not to build.

Wellness is a very broad category and it is easy to keep adding features such as detailed dashboards, workout plans, nutrition metrics, reminders, goals and recommendations. We wanted Pufo to remain focused and approachable.

Another challenge was AI powered meal tracking. AI can recognize a meal but turning that capability into a useful consumer experience requires much more than simply connecting an AI model. The process needs to be fast, understandable and easy enough that users will actually use it repeatedly.

We also had to think about how alarms, quests, habits, streaks, meals and nutrition could work together. Each feature can exist independently but the real value comes from making them feel like parts of the same daily routine.

Building a production ready subscription experience was another challenge. We wanted Pufo to move beyond being a prototype and become a real consumer product with App Store subscriptions, entitlement management and a foundation for future monetization. RevenueCat helped simplify that infrastructure so we could focus more of our development effort on the product itself.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our biggest accomplishment is taking Pufo from an idea into a fully working product that is now available on the App Store.

We did not want to stop at a concept or a collection of prototype screens. We wanted to build something that a real person could download, use and incorporate into their daily routine.

We are proud of bringing together several different experiences into one product. The Smart Alarm creates the first interaction of the day. Morning Quests create momentum. Streaks provide continuity. AI powered meal tracking makes food logging easier and nutrition history gives users a way to understand their progress over time.

We are also proud of the product design and the effort we put into making complex functionality feel simple. AI meal recognition, subscription management, notifications and progress tracking all involve significant technical complexity but the user should not have to think about that complexity.

The result is a product that combines a modern mobile experience with AI, cloud infrastructure and subscription technology while keeping the experience approachable.

What we learned

One of the biggest things we learned is that technology alone does not create better habits.

A product can provide information, recommendations and tracking but the experience still needs to make the next action feel achievable.

That changed the way we thought about Pufo during development. Instead of asking how many features we could add we kept coming back to a simpler question.

Can this help someone take a small positive action today?

We also learned that AI becomes much more valuable when it removes friction from something people already want to do. Meal recognition is useful not because AI itself is impressive but because it can make the process of understanding a meal faster and easier.

We learned that design and technology have to work together. A technically powerful feature is only useful if the user can understand it immediately and wants to use it again.

Building the subscription experience taught us another important lesson. Monetization should not become the center of the product. RevenueCat helped us separate subscription infrastructure from the core experience so users can focus on Pufo while the underlying subscription lifecycle is handled reliably.

What's next for Pufo

Pufo is only the beginning.

The next stage is making the experience increasingly personalized based on how each person actually uses the app.

We want Morning Quests to become more adaptive so the experience can better fit different routines and different types of users. The same approach can be extended to habit suggestions, nutrition insights and daily guidance.

We also see significant opportunities to improve the AI meal experience by making meal understanding more accurate and useful while keeping the interaction extremely simple.

Future versions can include deeper health and activity integrations so Pufo can understand more of the context around a user's day. This could allow the app to connect movement, sleep, routines, meals and habits into a more complete picture.

We also want to make progress insights more meaningful. Instead of simply showing numbers we want Pufo to help users understand patterns and recognize the small improvements they are making over time.

The longer term vision is to build Pufo into a more intelligent daily wellness companion that understands the small decisions happening throughout someone's day and helps connect them into healthier routines.

We do not want Pufo to tell people how to live their entire life.

We want it to help them take the next step.

Start small. Keep going.
