About the Project: Public Health Info Simplifier

Inspiration

The inspiration for the Public Health Info Simplifier came from the overwhelming amount of complex health information that people often struggle to understand, especially during health crises. Many public health warnings and guidelines are filled with medical jargon and difficult language that can confuse or alienate the general public. On the other hand, misinformation spreads easily, making it harder for people to make informed health decisions.

I wanted to create a tool that could break down health information into easy-to-understand language, while also addressing the spread of misinformation. This project aimed to empower individuals to make better health choices by providing them with clear, actionable, and up-to-date information. The focus was on accessibility, ensuring that the app could be used by people of all ages and backgrounds.

What it does

The Public Health Info Simplifier app serves as a resource for users to access health information in a clear and straightforward format. It gathers real-time updates from trusted health organizations like the WHO and CDC, offering users the following key features:

  • Health Alerts: Displays the latest health warnings, guidelines, and recommendations.
  • Misinformation Watch: Identifies and debunks common health myths, presenting evidence-based corrections.
  • Health Tips: Provides practical advice on physical and mental well-being, tailored to the user’s needs.
  • Regional Health Information: Offers location-specific guidelines and alerts, ensuring users get relevant information based on where they live.
  • Reliable Sources: Links to trusted organizations for users who want to dive deeper into health topics.

How we built it

The app was developed using a combination of web technologies:

This project was built using Knack's No-Code App Builder, which allowed me to:

  • Create a database of health alerts, tips, and misinformation.
  • Design custom pages for displaying different types of content, including health alerts, debunked myths, and health tips.
  • Add filtering capabilities so users can see information specific to their region or topic of interest.
  • Integrate reliable sources such as the WHO, CDC, and other public health organizations to ensure the information provided is credible and trustworthy.

The app was designed to be simple and intuitive, offering a smooth user experience while providing valuable, actionable health information.

Challenges we ran into

Like any project, there were several challenges along the way:

Despite the simplicity of using a no-code platform, there were a few challenges I faced during development:

  1. Data Management: Ensuring that the health alerts, tips, and misinformation were kept up to date was a challenge. I had to manually gather data from trusted health organizations and ensure it was correctly formatted.
  2. Localization: The Regions feature required careful attention to detail, ensuring that the right health information was displayed based on the user's location. This required organizing regional data and categorizing health tips accordingly.
  3. Misinformation Debunking: It was a challenge to find credible sources to debunk widespread health myths. I had to be diligent in selecting evidence-based information to ensure the app's integrity and credibility.
  4. User Interface Design: Although Knack’s builder made designing easy, I needed to make sure the app was both functional and visually appealing. Designing for clarity and ease of use was crucial, and some sections required multiple iterations to get right.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the challenges, there are several accomplishments I’m proud of:

  • Clear and Actionable Information: The app successfully breaks down complex health warnings and guidelines into simple, easy-to-understand language that anyone can follow.
  • Misinformation Combat: The app helps users identify common health myths and provides them with evidence-based facts to debunk those myths.
  • User-Centered Design: The interface was designed with the user in mind, ensuring that people of all ages and backgrounds can easily navigate and use the app.

What we learned

This project taught me several valuable lessons:

  • Communication: I realized how challenging it can be to communicate complex information in a way that is both simple and accurate. The process of simplifying health warnings without losing important details was a key learning experience.
  • User Experience: Designing for ease of use and accessibility is crucial when building tools that will be used by a broad audience. I learned the importance of iterative design and feedback to improve the user experience.

What's next for Public Health Info Simplifier

  • Expand regional coverage: Adding more countries and languages would make the app more accessible to people worldwide.
  • Push Notifications: Implement a feature that allows users to sign up for notifications related to specific health alerts.
  • Improve user feedback: Allow users to rate and provide feedback on health tips and misinformation articles, ensuring the content is helpful and accurate.
