What is Kulture Shock?
A game that trains your cultural intuition. You see a street style photo, guess what city it's from, and score based on how close you get. Think GeoGuessr but for fashion.
Every correct guess becomes a polaroid pin on your personal world map. Over time your map fills up and you can actually see your cultural knowledge growing.
Why we built it
People judge others by their clothes in under a second. A Princeton study found these snap judgments happen in about 130 milliseconds and they basically never go away. We wanted to flip that. Instead of judging, what if you could actually read what someone's outfit is telling you about their culture, their city, their story?
Fashion carries so much information that most of us miss. Kulture Shock turns that into a skill you can practice.
The wellness angle
This is a social wellness tool. Research shows that real cross-cultural exposure physically changes how your brain processes empathy. We're using a game to create that exposure. The goal is simple: replace snap judgment with curiosity.
How we built it
We designed and built the whole thing in Figma Make. The map is interactive and always visible. Everything else floats on top of it. We connected Supabase for user accounts so your polaroid collection saves across sessions. The visual style is editorial and warm, like a fashion magazine, because that's the energy we wanted.
Challenges
Getting the game flow to feel smooth inside Figma Make took a lot of iteration. The map needed to wrap horizontally like a globe and stop at vertical edges. The polaroid animations had to feel physical and satisfying. And figuring out a scoring formula that rewards partial knowledge instead of just punishing wrong answers took a few tries.
What we learned
Clothing is genuinely one of the most information-dense things humans encounter every day and almost nobody is trained to read it. Building this made us way more aware of our own blind spots. We kept getting West African and South Asian cities wrong and that was humbling and exactly the point.
