Inspiration
I'm Signal Officer in the military who decided to continue learning about user experience design during my deployment. Since we take exams to get certified in our abilities to maintain the network, we are required to take exams like CompTIA Security+, Network+, and A+. That's why I decided to find a way where the team could get the most out of their time during their service.
What it does
There's a lot of "hurry up and wait" in the military, since we have to get both small teams of 10 to large teams of 200 at the same place when we're needed. That means getting to the designated location early and waiting for the majority of the team.
The features this app would provide are: 1) Mobile-Friendly Design The current DoD website isn't responsive, and no app is available at the moment. 2) Offline App Network connectivity isn't always stable, especially when deployed overseas.
How I built it
As a small personal project, I took a look at all the pages of the DoD website and thought of ways it could be improved. Then I started doing research, looking at what others have done to address certain issues. Next, I sketched out my ideas of what the app looked like. I then created the wireframes in Adobe XD, turned them into high-fidelity mockups, and finished connecting the designs as a working prototype.
Challenges I ran into
Initially, I planned for this app to serve as an improvement for the website, using a mobile-first approach. As I started to do the sketches and wireframes, that's when I realized having an an app that's available offline would be more convenient for the team to learn wherever, whenever.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
This is my first Adobe XD prototype, and I'm proud to have been able to create this while on unstable network connection. I was able to teach myself the software and put everything together from start to end.
What I learned
I'm currently taking a User Experience course at General Assembly, where I have learned that user experience is more than just the visuals. There's a lot that goes into research, usability testing, and making sure the user has an emotional connection with the product.
What's next for Prototype - Exam Practice App - DoD Measure Up
I've learned not to fall in love with your work, but to fall in love with the process. Unless someone comes up to me who wants to bring this to life, I'm moving on to a new experiences of research, usability testing, and prototype creation.
