Inspiration
A large number of teachers around the world do not receive training on effective teaching practices after becoming a teacher. Teachers understand how to teach better with feedback from students, via which teachers can identify what students think, understand and find challenging in a topic. Also, we want to provide resources in the form of blogs, videos, teacher training programs and workshops, which are not available to all teachers.
What it does
pro-tégé is built to provide effective training to teachers to enhance their teaching abilities by providing constructive criticism from students, connecting them to teacher trainers, experienced leaders, attending workshops, receiving and even teacher development programs! It is an online platform that provides teachers with world class teacher training and skill development opportunities. A user has the options to:
- Read or create blogs on any topic they are interested in : A unique forum where students and teachers can post blogs to help out other teachers and students. There is a like and comment system in place as well.
- Watch or create videos on any topic they are interested in : pro-tégé also has the feature of sharing videos via which teachers can learn new skills from students and other teachers. The like and comment feature is present here as well!
- Provide feedback and constructive criticism on how to be a better teacher.
- Register for a program where teaching skills such as communication, listening, collaboration techniques etc is taught.
- Register for workshops where the speaker talks on specific skills and techniques to have more effective teaching practices.
The website also has features such as badges and roles to motivate students and teachers sharing their knowledge and feedback. Badge status can be upgraded with more likes and comments on one's post in the forum. For example, a user receives an achievement badge for first comment or like on a post.
How we built it
We built the website using Wix, using its various features to collaborate many web pages and create a website with many functionalities and uses. We used the various apps on Wix, including programs, forums, menu, login and many more. We also added many sections and functionalities to the website template provided to be better suited for our needs. We also added many back-end components in addition such as badges, pictures, a custom log in page etc. Integrating this with the front-end of the template was very challenging, as this was a completely new software for us. Finally, we used GoDaddy registry to give our website a domain name - pro-tege.study We used the promo code offered to us by MLH to buy the domain name from GoDaddy, however we could not attach it to our website
Challenges we ran into
The Wix platform was not used by our team members before. Hence, learning how to work with Wix was a huge challenge for our team members. Additionally, efficiency was of utmost importance as Wix only allows one team member to edit at a certain time. We learned how to make new sections, web pages and integration of the website using the editor feature of the Wix platform. Back-end with Wix is what we found to be most challenging. The functionality of badges and roles is a huge a mountain we were able to conquer in this project. Finally, the sheer amount of work we had to put in with the amount of webpages and functionalities we have added to the website is another major challenge we faced.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost, we are proud to have learned how to use Wix in the span over the last 24 hours. It was a completely new software for all of our team members and we were not only able to learn it but also use it effectively in our project. We are proud of the amount of work and functionalities we were able to put into the website in the limited time we had provided. With the many webpages came a lot of attention to detail and design, along with back-end modifications for each web page. We are also proud of the teamwork, integration, work distribution and determination our team has shown over the duration of the hackathon!
What we learned
We learned how to effectively use the Wix platform in this hackathon. On the Wix platform, we learned how to add back-end functionalities such as badges, roles, events, programs etc. Moreover, we learned how to make front-end changes and design changes using the platform to create our vast website. We also learned many skills such as teamwork, work distribution, time management and efficiency during the hackathon.
What's next for protégé
We aim to take our platform on a bigger scale where more teachers can contribute their learnings as well as new teachers can adopt new methods of innovative teaching. We will provide materials that students can use to start their journey of sharing. We will also provide more resources so that we can also positively impact the rural, uneducated sectors. We will help teachers find their own unique way of teaching and mentoring.
