Inspiration

The inspiration for the push_swap project came from a desire to:

Improve my understanding of sorting algorithms beyond the basic ones. Enhance my skills in C programming, particularly with pointers and data structures. Tackle a complex problem that requires both theoretical knowledge and practical implementation skills. Participate in a coding challenge that tests algorithmic thinking and problem-solving abilities.

What it does

Throughout the development of push_swap, I learned several key concepts and skills:

Sorting Algorithms: Gained a deep understanding of various sorting algorithms, including insertion sort, bubble sort, quicksort, and mergesort. Data Structures: Learned to implement and manipulate stacks using linked lists and arrays. Algorithm Optimization: Explored ways to optimize sorting algorithms to minimize the number of operations and improve performance. C Programming: Improved my proficiency in C, particularly with memory management, pointers, and dynamic allocation. Debugging and Testing: Developed robust testing strategies and debugging techniques to ensure the correctness and efficiency of the program.

How we built it

Studied various sorting algorithms and their complexities. Researched stack data structures and operations (push, pop, swap, rotate, reverse rotate). Created a basic stack structure using linked lists. Implemented the required operations (sa, sb, ss, pa, pb, ra, rb, rr, rra, rrb, rrr). Developed sorting logic using a combination of sorting algorithms and stack operations. Analyzed the number of operations required by different algorithms. Implemented heuristics to choose the most efficient sorting strategy for different input sizes and patterns. Used memoization and other techniques to reduce redundant operations. Created a comprehensive set of test cases to cover various scenarios (sorted, reverse sorted, random, small, and large inputs). Used debugging tools and techniques to identify and fix issues in the implementation.

Challenges we ran into

Algorithm Selection: Choosing the right sorting algorithm and operations combination for different input sizes and patterns was a complex task that required extensive testing and tuning. Optimization: Reducing the number of operations while maintaining correctness was challenging and required a deep understanding of algorithmic optimization techniques. Memory Management: Managing memory efficiently in C, especially with dynamic allocation and pointers, was crucial to avoid leaks and segmentation faults. Debugging: Ensuring the correctness of the program with all edge cases required meticulous debugging and testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Efficiency Gains: Successfully optimized the sorting algorithm to significantly reduce the number of operations, outperforming initial benchmarks. Robust Implementation: Created a robust and flexible implementation that handles a wide variety of input cases, from small to very large datasets. Comprehensive Testing Suite: Developed an extensive testing suite that covers edge cases and ensures the reliability and correctness of the program. Improved Problem-Solving Skills: Enhanced my problem-solving skills and ability to think algorithmically, which will be beneficial for future projects and challenges.

What we learned

Deep Algorithm Understanding: Gained a deeper understanding of advanced sorting algorithms and their practical applications. Effective Optimization Techniques: Learned various optimization techniques to improve algorithm efficiency. Practical C Programming Skills: Improved practical skills in C programming, including memory management, pointer manipulation, and dynamic data structures. Debugging Best Practices: Developed effective debugging strategies and learned the importance of rigorous testing in software development.
