Inspiration
We were mainly inspired by our time working as tutors for NYC’s Summer Rising program. Many of our students were clearly interested in learning but were limited by their environment. Oftentimes, the classrooms they studied in were underserved or unconducive for productivity. By creating this website we hope to offer a resource to freely explore in the environments they choose. Another inspiration comes from the game Akinator, which has an almost unnerving ability to detect any character, and which we hoped to replicate with Prospects.
What it does
Welcome to prospects, where everyone can participate in novel research. From cloud spotting on mars to documenting historical conservatory entries, there is a way for everyone to contribute to science. Play a game or participate in an ongoing project to help contribute to discoveries in your favorite STEM field.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, JS, and Papaparse to create Prospects. Paraparse API was used to import CSV files to Javascript--we stored our game information and questions in separate CSV files.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the challenges we ran into were importing the CSV file properly and loading the games before the website loaded (importing was done asynchronously). Initially, there was a miscommunication in the end goal for CSS layouts, but using wireframer (link), we were able to get back on track.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the variety of games present on Prospects!
What we learned
We learned about using flexbox, papaparse functions, and switch cases.
What's next for prospects
The next step would be to create a back-end and develop more questions and games in response. Another goal is to add an API to create a preview image for the project/game pages.
