Inspiration

After two years of global pandemics, we are finally entering a new period. It is true that many people experience isolations, the changes of class form, and overfatigue in their mental health. We, as UCSD students, want to encourage people to go outside, explore our community, and enjoy the "new period" of life. Prospect thus born due to our constantly imagination.

What it does

Prospect's primary intention is to enjoy the life and build their body health. It primarily contains the following features:

  1. Game-Like Competition: We add a "points system" where encourage users to explore the new places near them. Basically, the more places they visit, the more points they accumulate. Because we are still at the post-pandemic period, it is significant to be care of the COVID-rate. Thus, within the Prospect, the rare place with beatiful scene has the higher points waiting for people to explore. Users also can choose to go there individually or work as a team.

  2. Color Distinction to Shows Nearby Locations to Visit: One big feature is the color distinction pattern. At first when the users enter the App, they will see a black-n-white map at the center of their homepage. As they exploring the world, the places where they went to would become colorful. The contrast color distinction will add more visualling appealing to the users, and this is also a reflection of our life: the black-n-white places are like what people were during the pandemic life-sad, nervous, and worried-while the colorfy places is a symbol for the new life.

  3. Consider Minorities: Prospect is a user-friendly App. The develop team considers much about human-centered strategy. For the color-blind people who can't see the clear color distinction feature, they can see the pins on the map. For those people who have bad eyesight they can use the zoom in feature at the top of the map to read it clearly.

  4. Trip Planner:If you ever mess up with your plan, use the trip planner. It provides a concise way for people to schedule their appointment by selecting the date and locations, providing red pings when the event is coming, and also becoming a small "poster" at users' trip planner page.

  5. Build Up Your Friendship: Traveling is not a sole work. It is time to consider the extra benefits brought to the users. Prospect offers the page for people to Chat and share trips with Friends. They can also get the points together if they decide to formulate a team and go somewhere. Also, users can build their profile with trips, photos, and interests. We want to make sure each person by using Prospect can gain lots of fun beyond excercising.

  6. Potential Benefits to Local Economy: Prospect can bring lots of potential benefits to the local economy. For example, the place where the map recommend to go or have more points than other places may attract more people to go, which thus spurn the local economy of the restaurants and markets.

  7. Weekly Event: There's a weekly event on the top of the ranking page. It provides the opportunity for people to join an event, such as go hike, park, beach, and so on. It can furthur promote people's enthusiasm by adding more points as a reward to the event.

How we built it

The way our team build it can be concluded by using the "3 Cs strategy":

-Collaboration as a Team: It's super important to communicate together and develop the idea first through the whole process. Each teammate proposes their idea first and we pick the one that most facinating to us. Then, we spend a whole morning to brainstorm and talk about the potential features of the App. This is an important step for each of us understand what's we want and start from the angle of the users.

-Clear Division with Different Specialization: Next, our team has a diverse background. We have one Cognitive Science person who is a UX/UI designer, two Math-CSs people who are website developer, and one EE person who works on the back end. The diverse background makes our team unique and each person can focus on different part of it.

-Constantly Working Together: We spend fully 36 hours without sleep on it by working in person at UCSD. The team work is so important through the process, and everyone contributes much to the project.

Challenges we ran into

It is never easy to build a real App. There are indeed many challenges to us. For example, we have to start from the perspective of users to make our Prospect become more user-friendly and interactive; there's an issue with the set up when we start to build the project; another issue about downloading SVG from Figma; and so on. However, we are glad to figure all of them out in the end.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We developed a great proof-of-concept that we believed would truly invigorate the mental health of our users. We learned a lot about technologies that we're interested in and understanding the challenge of getting components to work with each other.

What we learned

Time-management and previous experience with the proposed tech stack is crucial.

What's next for Prospect

  • Deploying the UX/UI onto a mobile device.
  • Storing GPS data on a database through a web framework
  • Utilizing data queries to color-code geographic locations.
