Inspiration
River pollution has always been a problem in the world. Most people do not recycle, and unnecessary non-recyclable plastic is produced all the time. We have always been a fan of the ocean and the idea that some people are unknowingly harming it has always concerned us. We are not going to develop a robot that can clean up the ocean, but we can try to show people the damage they themselves can do if they are not careful enough.
What it does
We have created a game where you control a boat going down a river. In front of you there are lots of rocks, garbage and other dangerous things. Your task is to avoid all the obstacles while trying to achieve the highest score.
How we built it
The game was developed using a game engine called gms2. First, we created a plan with all the features we wanted to have in the game. Each task was divided between us and we made a rough estimate of how long each task would take. Then we started programming and designing the prototype.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was definitely the time pressure. We had many plans for the prototype, but unfortunately we had to cancel some of them in order to deliver at least a playable product. As for programming, there were definitely a few things I had no idea how to do immediately, so those had to also be cut.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud to have accomplished what we set out to do. In terms of art and sound, we are quite surprised that we managed to piece everything together in a reasonably coherent way. And personally, I am especially proud of the save system we managed to understand and add. We also managed to portray a fake 3d effect on our boat using a technique called 2d sprite stacking.
What we learned
In the end, we actually learned a lot. First of all, we definitely should have multiplied our time estimates by 1.5, because there is always one thing that takes much longer than expected. Also, we learned a lot of programming shortcuts and techniques during this process that managed to save us a bunch of time. Looking back, we really did grow a lot, and including the fact that the goal was to create a prototype in a short time, we definitely gained a new experience in project management.
What's next for Property of RTU 1.6.2
We definitely plan to continue this game and start new, even better, even cooler projects. Participating in even more Hakathons is also a goal we have in mind.
