ProofSkin — Skincare, with reasons
From a YouCam skin scan to an explainable, budget-aware skincare plan, before you buy.
Inspiration
Shopping for skincare often means navigating confusing claims, too many products, and a lack of transparency about why a recommendation is being made. ProofSkin helps users make a better-informed decision before they spend.
What it does
- Consent-first analysis. A visitor may upload a clear front-facing photo, explicitly agree to third-party processing, and request a cosmetic skin analysis via a server-side YouCam integration.
- Understand skin signals. The interface groups eight cosmetic concern categories, gives an overall snapshot, and explains that lower condition scores identify potential priorities, not medical diagnoses.
- Build an intentional routine. A transparent rules engine considers the lowest scores, prioritizes basic cleanser/moisturizer/SPF categories, and adds a targeted treatment category only when its illustrative basket budget allows.
- Compare over time. Real-scan numerical snapshots can be saved voluntarily in browser-local storage. The app does not retain portraits.
- Explore without personal data. An explicitly marked sample walkthrough demonstrates the entire shopping experience without passing made-up values off as YouCam results.
How we built it
A lightweight responsive HTML/CSS/JavaScript frontend communicates with Node.js server endpoints that hold the API key securely. The YouCam adapter implements an image-file upload request, signed binary upload, skin-analysis task creation, and task-status polling, with input validation and defensive result handling. The project includes six automated tests, including mocked provider interactions.
Live API status: The integration has passed local mock tests but a real YouCam API call has not been verified because the submission environment does not yet have a configured YouCam API key. A functional sample walkthrough is available now, but must not be mistaken for live analysis.
Built with: YouCam REST API integration, JavaScript, Node.js, HTML5, CSS3, Vercel.

Challenges and takeaways
The most complex part is treating the skin-analysis endpoint as an asynchronous workflow instead of a one-click result: signed uploads, task IDs, polling and errors all need clear feedback. Scores are translated into explainable category recommendations, not unsupported medical or product efficacy claims. With a provider key, the live response can be tested and any remaining schema differences resolved.
Privacy: No medical diagnosis, no uploaded portrait retained by the app, and no actual store inventory or live pricing. Illustrative prices are labeled.
Next: verify real YouCam credentials, record a production API-backed demo, and extend product guidance with verified catalogs and multilingual accessibility.
