Prooflane — Don't Just Ship Green. Ship With Proof.

Inspiration: Code is easy to generate. Trust is harder to build.

Software development has entered a new era. AI-assisted coding tools can generate features in minutes, but the process of validating, securing, and safely deploying those features remains fragmented and complex.

A passing CI/CD pipeline doesn't necessarily mean a release is safe. Security vulnerabilities can remain undetected, runtime performance can regress, provenance can be incomplete, and approvals can lack meaningful evidence.

That inspired Prooflane — an evidence-driven release assurance platform that gives every software release a passport.

Our mission is simple: Make every deployment decision explainable, traceable, and accountable.

What it does

Prooflane transforms the software release lifecycle into an intelligent, evidence-backed decision process.

Rather than merely displaying a green or red pipeline status, Prooflane evaluates whether a software release is genuinely ready for production.

Key capabilities:

  • Nine-stage lifecycle validation: Covers Plan, Create, Verify, Package, Secure, Release, Configure, Monitor, and Govern.
  • Explainable risk assessment: Evaluates security, test coverage, reliability signals, provenance, and governance using a deterministic, weighted policy engine.
  • Automated release blocking: Enforces mandatory safety requirements, preventing critical failures from being overlooked by an otherwise healthy aggregate score.
  • Interactive failure simulation: Demonstrates how the system responds to security findings, failing tests, performance regressions, missing provenance, and governance violations.
  • Tamper-evident release history: Uses SHA-256 hash chaining to preserve traceable evaluation and approval records.
  • Human-supervised approvals: Keeps authorization separate from automated analysis, ensuring important release decisions remain under human control.
  • GitLab integration: Provides server-side interfaces for examining real pipeline results and initiating GitLab Duo workflows.
  • Agentic workflow design: Includes a custom three-agent GitLab Duo flow for failure investigation, guarded remediation, and independent verification.

How we built it

Prooflane combines a lightweight web application with deterministic release policies and GitLab-native automation.

Frontend: HTML5, CSS3, and vanilla JavaScript power a responsive dashboard designed to make technical release evidence understandable at a glance.

Backend: Node.js handles release evaluations, approval operations, event records, and server-side GitLab API communication.

Decision engine: A deterministic policy system combines weighted risk indicators with mandatory release-blocking conditions. Critical security findings, insufficient test results, reliability violations, and missing provenance cannot be overridden simply by a favorable total score.

Auditability: Each evaluation and approval is recorded as a separate event in a SHA-256 chained ledger, allowing the application to detect alterations to its local history.

GitLab CI/CD: A native pipeline configuration defines nine evidence-producing lifecycle jobs, including JSON evidence artifacts and a content-hash manifest.

GitLab Duo Agent Platform: A custom workflow configuration defines a supervised sequence of investigation, guarded remediation, and independent review. Human approval remains separate from agent-generated recommendations.

Deployment architecture: The project includes a non-root Docker configuration and deployment instructions for Google Cloud Run.

Challenges we faced

1. Preventing misleading safety scores

A release might achieve a strong overall risk score while still containing a critical vulnerability. We solved this by separating weighted risk scoring from mandatory hard-stop policies.

2. Balancing automation with human control

Autonomous agents can accelerate investigation and repair, but production decisions need clear accountability. We designed separate evaluation, remediation, verification, and approval boundaries.

3. Protecting release evidence

Conventional logs can be difficult to audit reliably. We implemented a hash-chained event history and integrity verification to detect modifications within the local evidence store.

4. Distinguishing simulations from real infrastructure

Demonstrations must be reproducible without creating a false impression of production readiness. Prooflane labels its simulated scenarios separately from GitLab-backed activity.

Accomplishments we're proud of

  • Built a complete interactive release-readiness dashboard.
  • Implemented six reproducible assessment scenarios, including five distinct failure conditions.
  • Passed 22 automated local tests.
  • Successfully validated all nine lifecycle stages locally.
  • Implemented tamper-evident event recording and protected approval operations.
  • Prepared a native GitLab CI/CD pipeline and a custom GitLab Duo agent workflow.
  • Designed an auditable architecture that separates recommendations, policy enforcement, and human authorization.

What we learned

Building Prooflane reinforced an important principle: intelligent automation must be verifiable, not merely impressive.

We explored how deterministic rules and agentic workflows can complement each other, why evidence provenance matters, and how security-conscious design can preserve human control without slowing down development.

We also learned the importance of distinguishing a successful automated check from a genuine production-readiness decision.

What's next for Prooflane?

Our roadmap includes stronger cryptographic provenance attestations, durable multi-instance audit storage, richer GitLab environment protection, deployment analytics, and more sophisticated agent-assisted incident investigation.

We also envision expanding release intelligence to include reliability trends, historical deployment failures, and measurable infrastructure-efficiency improvements.

The vision

The future of software development isn't just about generating code faster. It's about delivering that code safely, confidently, and responsibly.

Prooflane turns continuous integration into continuous confidence.

Don't just ship green. Ship with proof.
