Inspiration
What if intelligence itself had an economic cost?
We were inspired by the idea of creating an artificial economy where autonomous agents do more than simply generate responses. What if they had limited resources, financial responsibilities, competing objectives, and real consequences for every decision?
This led us to build Proof of Work — An Economy Where Thinking Costs Money.
Our goal was to explore how autonomous agents behave when intelligence, decision-making, and computational resources become part of an economic system.
What is Proof of Work?
Proof of Work is a multi-agent economic simulation in which five autonomous agents operate within a shared economy.
Agents can:
- Earn and manage virtual money.
- Spend resources to make decisions.
- Borrow through a loan mechanism.
- Participate in auctions.
- Compete using different strategies.
- Track balances, transactions, and economic performance.
The platform provides an interactive dashboard to observe the economy, understand agent behaviour, and analyse how individual decisions influence the overall system.
It also includes experiment and tournament workflows that allow different strategies to be compared across repeated simulations.
How We Built It
We developed Proof of Work as a modular application combining a Python-based simulation engine with a web-based dashboard.
Technology stack:
- Python: Core simulation logic, agent behaviour, and economic mechanisms.
- Flask: Backend and application routing.
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript: Interactive dashboard and visualisation.
- Nebius Token Factory integration: Configurable model-client infrastructure for AI-powered agent interactions.
- NVIDIA Nemotron: Configured as the intended model option for agent reasoning.
The application brings together agent orchestration, economic transactions, financial mechanisms, experiment execution, and performance analysis.
We also developed testing workflows to validate the simulation and its core functionality.
What We Learned
Building Proof of Work helped us understand that creating intelligent agents is only one part of building a multi-agent system.
We explored:
- Multi-agent coordination and decision-making.
- Economic modelling and resource allocation.
- Designing loan and auction mechanisms.
- Tracking transactions and maintaining simulation state.
- Comparing strategies through repeated experiments.
- Building interactive dashboards for complex systems.
- Structuring modular and testable software.
One of our biggest takeaways was that the environment in which agents operate can significantly influence their decisions and outcomes.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was designing an economic environment where multiple agents could interact without making the simulation unpredictable or inconsistent.
We had to carefully implement balances, transactions, loans, auctions, and agent decisions while ensuring that the system remained observable and testable.
Another challenge was integrating the simulation engine with the dashboard so that users could understand what was happening inside the economy rather than seeing only final results.
We also worked on experiment workflows, debugging, testing, and improving the reliability of the application.
What's Next?
Proof of Work is designed as an extensible platform.
Future improvements include more sophisticated agent strategies, deeper economic mechanisms, expanded experiment capabilities, and further integration of AI models for agent reasoning.
Our vision is to make Proof of Work a platform for exploring how intelligence, computation, incentives, and economic behaviour interact.
