Inspiration
Our group discussed how the growth of social media platforms over the last decade has allowed people all over the world to connect with each other in new ways, building relationships, sharing knowledge and expertise, and creating visibility for many social justice issues. However, social media is known to cause negative effects on users' mental health and self-esteem. When talking with each other, we identified how important our conversations with friends and family as well as journaling are to be able to manage our mental health and everyday stress and challenges. Our group is composed of students from all over the world therefore we were inspired to create a project that encourages multi-cultural conversations. We also wanted to create a social platform that encourages people to get offline and interact with others, while reflecting on themselves and what’s happening in their life. The use of prompts instigates conversations and journal entries about many topics ranging from culture to relationships to growth. These prompts provide an opportunity for education and self-reflection.
What it does
Our group proposes a website that generates journal and conversation starter prompts that encourage positive self-reflection and interactions with real people in their life, whether that be friends, family, and even strangers. PromptMe generates prompts that can be read through the website or read out loud, allowing for a more inclusive interaction.
How we built it
Using Velo by Wix, we created a prototype that generates prompts using the following scheme:
1) Collect user preferences for prompt/conversation starters. 2) The selected preferences are used as keywords added to our template sentences (example below). 3) Using user selections, generate a prompt using ChatGPT. 4) Display generated prompt and provide the option to like and share with the community. 4) User can review their past prompt and prompts shared in the community.
Example sentence: I am feeling [mood]. Give me a [depth] [journaling prompt/conversation starter] with the following keywords [theme]
Challenges we ran into
Working in a group to narrow down a topic. We also debated whether to create an app or website. Once we determined our topic, it was challenging to determine all of the necessary main features and preferences that we wanted to include on the website. A larger challenge is that our project does not have the backend implementation to connect and use ChatGPT therefore we currently have to manually input our search into ChatGPT and then add the output to our website.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This is our first hackathon and we are very proud to have created a product that each group member would love to use and that aligns with our values and interests.
What we learned
We learned that there is a need for journal writing and conversation starter apps. We also learned that once people find a common theme to talk about, it's so much easier to start the conversation and take it deeper. Our team definitely experienced that during the past 2 days by having more meaningful conversations using the generated prompts. Over a short time, our group members also learned the basics of creating a website that takes into consideration all the artistic and accessible design choices.
What's next for PromptMe
We would like PromptMe to be a fully functioning site. Since our website provides options for journal prompts, we would like to provide an additional function that allows the user to journal within the app. Additionally, the logic behind our website is that we use ChatGPT to generate a new prompt each time a user inputs their selection. We would like to investigate how we could store the generated prompts and possibly reuse them. In terms of future use, we believe that PromptMe has the ability to create a sense of community in different spaces and we would like to share our website with our college campus.
