This project was about analyzing data from OSHA and determining solutions to reducing the number of incidents and injuries in the workplace. This was our group's first time participating in MISSO's Hackathon.
Our inspirations for doing this project comes from our families, and how they worked hard to help us get the lives that we have now. Regardless of where we work in the future, we want safer guidelines for workers from OSHA, which ultimately inspired us to choose this prompt.
The analysis focused on two different guidelines (1996-2001 & 2002-2011) and focused on the worker's hours, economic incidents that occurred, as well as any additional information that helped with our research. This project was built using Jupyter's Notebook on Python.
While we enjoyed this project, there were several challenges that we had to face, such as the lack of programming knowledge. We ultimately had to learn how to program using Python and Power Bi from scratch. This was a challenge because our team is new to Hackathons, and we did not know these kinds of programming languages. Another issue was conflicting schedule times. Because one of our group members was extremely busy with schoolwork and other activities, there was not a lot of time for us to meet together.
Some of the accomplishments made from this experience includes the will to learn something new and giving the presentation plenty of interesting visuals. There was also lots of research incorporated with this video.
We learned many different problem solving techniques for dealing with different team issues and understanding that teamwork and coordination are essential to a project like this.
After Hackathon is over, we plan to continue using our skills to learn different coding languages, and create a detailed outline of our thoughts on OSHA. We also plan to have an organized report for everyone to understand.
